I have been looking into the tumeric topic that came up yesterday because I had found out it was legal when I checked into it. I don't know why Marilyn would say it was illegal unless she was talking about a large amount because of cellulose. I know several people on here take it for the anti-inflamatory help it can give. Looking back on some emails, Sheila a pecanbread moderator said it was legal, so I asked her for an explanation. Here it is. Katy

Turmeric as a spice is legal. Turmeric as a supplement is also legal. However, the amounts of turmeric that are often suggested to take as a supplement may contain too large a quantity of concentrated cellulose for some SCDers. The amount of cellulose may feed harmful microbes and negate any anti-flammatory effects that the turmeric may have.

The active portion of turmeric that helps some people with inflammation is called curcumin. If a person takes a high quality, high potency Curcumin supplement instead of a cheaper Turmeric supplement they'll get a higher dose of the active ingredients and less cellulose.

This is not a supplement that Elaine recommended in BTVC (multivitamins, CLO etc..). If a person decides that they want to try it they should do so carefully. Most SCDers should start with a lower dose than is generally recommended for the general public. If an otherwise healthy person gets a little diarrhea from taking too much of a supplement it generally can clear up in a few days. If a person with bowel troubles takes too much and gets diarrhea they could end up in a nasty flare. Start low and go slow if you decide to supplement.
