local libraries has audio books - just the availability is limited to what is available

Re: Fonts...again...

Dear Val,I am sorry to hear about you losing eye sight, and that it's causing you trouble reading! As someone who really couldn't imagine life without books I can sympathize! However, neither reading books nor surfing the web need to be lost to you should you ever lose all your vision (wich I hope never happens!). There is software that will convert what is displayed on the screen into speech - I think the term in English is Screen-Access Software, but I am sure any society for the visually impaired could give you more info on that. Or perhaps even someone on this list knows more and is willing to share that information with you and us all! When it comes to books, there are audiobooks, both the commercial kind and the ones meant specifically for those who need it due to illness or impairment (could be visual impairments, could be learning disabilities, could be lack of the strength needed to hold up a book while reading, an! d it could be many other things). I know that in Sweden anyone with a disability affecting the ability to read a printed book could request that any book not already available in audio format be recorded for them. Free of charge. As a librarian I have helped students put in such requests for the recording of school books. I don't know if there is something similar in the US, or what it's called and how to make a request etc. But I would assume there is, and perhaps someone else on this list knows more on how to go about it and can enlighten the rest of us on that... Anyway: Learning braille won't be required for you to keep enjoy reading.love and best of wishes!/Reb>> As if I don't have enough problems with my eyes... Now, it seems as though the fonts in texts are getting smaller and smaller. I've been getting so aggrevated with it lately, that I'm th___i! s close to just junking this stupid 'puter. GGRRR... Feeling sorry for myself. What do I do when I lose all my vision? I'm not going to be able to learn brail. The tips of my fingers have no feeling. Haven't had feeling for years now.> > > Love and blessings,> Val > > > The residual attributes that we pass down to our children may not be in our genes... but in our souls.>

Reb,

Thank you for the uplifting email. And thank you for the information. I really appreciate it. You are right about reading and books. I've been trying for awhile to get a book written and I read just about anything I can get my hands on. Words have always been my passion. Tom was just saying the other day that he'd like to get some audio books to have to listen to when we are traveling. We went on a mini vacation one year, driving from eastern U.S. to western U.S., and back again. He really enjoyed it when I purchased a novel and read it to him. And it did make the long trip driving a pleasant experience. I'm going to miss the reading, but I think I can live with the audio.

I am going to look into this a little deeper. I may even make myself aquainted with the vizually impaired to get ideas from them.

Thanks again.

Love and blessings,

Val
