Guest guest
Hi all - I'm a little nervous to post this - but I have officially been med- free for over one week with no adverse reactions. July 5th also marked my one year anniversary of being on SCD. I am cautiously optimistic that this means I'm truly med-free because in the past, I would have soft stools within a couple of days of missing a dose. Although according to my doctor, I had a " mild case of UC " it has felt like a long year of healing and gradually reducing my sulfasalazine (azulfidine) down from 6 pills every day. I took my last pill on July 3. Being med-free has been a major goal and one reason I've been able to be so faithful to SCD. Now ... I need a new goal. This question is for those who have been on SCD for a long time, who have healed, and have begun to add in foods outside of SCD. Although I realize that the underlying reason I have UC is because I lack the enzymes to process starch and sugars, and it may just be a fact of life that I'll need to be strict SCD for the rest of my life, I would like to know if others have added in non-SCD foods and if so, which foods seemed to be tolerated. (I guess I'm looking for a Pecanbread " stages " list for post-SCD.) I seem to remember hearing that Elaine's daughter eats about 80% SCD. What does she include now for the other 20%? It would be good for me to have some idea of what's ahead. Any experiences, advice, or input will be appreciated. Guest guest
Congratulations! That's a great accomplishment. I have been on the SCD for 7 years this September. I was really disappointed when I found out I couldn't tolerate a little corn syrup (I LOVE Miracle Whip and ketchup) or bread. I am sure I have a problem digesting some sugars, but food allergies/intolerances seem to be my primary problem. I start itching and coughing when I eat wheat, for example. I have had problems eating gluten-free baked goods. I am not sure if that's the rice flour or something else and I haven't been willing to risk testing it out at this point. I stick to nut flours. I eat canned veggies that list no starch or sugars. I don't usually stress over spices or those fanatical things you have to do in the beginning. For me personally, sugar seems to be tolerated, but not corn syrup sweeteners. That said, I only eat it when it's in very small amounts and there aren't other quick, convenient options. Finally, the one big thing I've added back to my diet is potatoes. I have no problem eating them or chips. I don't eat any frozen fries with added sugar or wheat. I am glad to have potatoes again, but I can honestly say that none of the foods are as good as being healthy! I wonder sometimes now why I really missed the foods so much. Whenever I did cheat (and paid for it later), I realized it didn't taste nearly as good as I thought. Oh, unfortunately, chocolate doesn't seem to be on my OK list. I don't have a terrible reaction to it, but it's not something I can eat consistently. I think we are all going to be different, but I am so thankful to God for having enough to eat and having my health! Congrats again to you. Guest guest
Hi Mel, Thanks for the post. I'm curious - what happens when you experience a reaction to something? I'm trying to work through what will happen (next year of course) when I add in a new (illegal) food. Do you eat something and then wait several days? My darkest fear is eating things occasionally, having them not cause a discernible reaction, but secretly feeding the bad bacteria that made me sick in the first place. Kathy MED FREE since 7/4/08!!!
