Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, Not trying to be annoying but if it is distilled what would be the problem? I know when the Japanese try to express what Shochu is to a westerner they usually say " Japanese Vodka " now I do not know if this is an accurate characterization but still. Anyway, this whole alcohol thing deeply confuses me. I went to a wine store with my hubby and we wanted to get some wines for the house (I don't drink too much but he wanted ones I can try a bit or sip) and the staff (very knowledgeable) but I couldn't really convey my needs very well and the couldn't help me even after reading the file Gay sent me. I still have questions. Also, are all vodkas legal? There are all these wacky ones today that have malic acid added to it and so on. Anyway, not that I am some big drinker LOL! It would be nice to be able to make some good choices. Jody, I think my caution stems from the fact that although it SHOULD be legal (being distilled), I worry about starch issues and not being fully distilled. I don't know enough about the production of shochu to actually give you a definitive answer. Given that you have had so many anomalous reactions to things, that's why I said to approach it with extreme care. I might be just fine with it. You might not be. I tend to be paranoid about adding new things, having made so many mistakes along the way and set myself back. <g> And always remember: just because you're paranoid doesn't mean the universe ISN'T out to get you! — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

Technically if you could find pure soy sauce (without added wheat), it should be legal because it's supposed to be just distilled soy. But many SCDers have learned the hard way that it can cause problems, so it's been classified as illegal. With regard to your questions about vodkas - you're right that there are a whole slew of new and interesting twists on vodka (and rum, and others). My favorite before SCD was Ruby Red Absolut. But knowing that the " Ruby Red " had to come from some type of " flavoring " , I don't drink it. I squeeze a grapefruit into my plain Absolut. I think if you stick to the mainstream plain alcohols, you will be fine. I always look at anything outside the standard offerings to be a red flag and stay away. There is plenty to indulge in within those choices ... and I'm speaking from experience. ;-) Kathy UC since 12/05 SCD since 7/5/07 Med free <crossing fingers>
