I was asked to report to nuc med on Friday for my 1st yearly WBS. When I

arrived, I was given 2 mCi of I-131 via capsule and instructed to report back to

nuc med on Tuesday at 2pm (four days later)! Is this right?? I've always heard

they scan the following day. Will my levels be sufficiently high enough to be

detected four days later? I don't know what the radioactive decay rate is but

when I was given 150 mCi for ablation, I was released the following day because

it had decayed enough to send me home!

I'm worried about having an accurate scan! Yes, my Tg was <.1 (great news) but

I'm also aware I can have a positive scan with a negative Tg so I want to be

sure my tests are accurate. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! By the

way, my TSH is currently > 300.

2.5 cm Follicular and 9 mm Papillary

2/26/01 LL (False Negative in Surgery/Positive Final Pathology 3 days later)

3/10/01 TT (Remaining lobe cancer free)

Hypoparathyroidism (.5 Rocaltrol/1500 mg calcium), PTH 0

3/28/01 148 mCi RAI (w/o LID), .300 Synthroid, 0 Tg

Your schedule sounds about right. I usually get the dose on Friday and the

scan on Monday, although I've heard of 48 hour scans, too. Since they can

anticipate the rate of radiation decay and excretion, they take that into

account when doing the scan, so it shouldn't be a problem.

BTW - the reason why you were cleared to go home the day after your 150 mCi dose

is not so much that the RAI had decayed (although it did), but more that

whatever wasn't taken up by thyroid cells had mostly been excreted. If the RAI

wasn't active for several days, we wouldn't have to take precautions after

receiving ablative doses.

In my very lay opinion, your scan will be fine

(and we'll be waiting to hear the results) -

Good luck -

Hi, Christy -

I have the exact same schedule for my first WBS (except I go back in

at 9 AM). The reason - they're not there on Memorial Day! I was told

there should be no problems with the scan

Cheers,
