Guest guest
Dear sisters While I have been quiet in this list for some time, I must let you know my good news and the lessons my experience has for us all. As I wrote earlier, I went to a gynaecologist after mild peeing difficulties. An ultrasound showed an enlarged kidney and a uterus with fibroids at about 12 weeks. I t was said that the pressure from the enlarged uterus was obstructing my ureters and causing backflow of urine and consequent threat to my kidneys. Three gynies told me I needed a hysterectomy to protect my kidneys. Only no 4 suggested looking inside my bladder and kidneys to confirm whether there was indeed any obstruction. Well, today, I had the cystoscopy and renal pylogram and yeay! - no obstruction. Hence, no need to remove my uterus or otherwise deal with the fibroids surgically. It just shows that we must question, question, question and seek further opinions until satisfied with the answers. I don't mean stubbornly holding on to a view because that is what we might like regardless of the real situation, but making very sure the facts are tracked down. I kept going for 2nd opinions because all 3 gynies I had seen gave me quite different perspectives and views despite the fact they were all recommending hysterectomy. I feel very feisty and strong after my experience. I also had a clerk at the clinic very put out because I insisted on READING everything they were asking me to sign. She wasn't used to such chutzpah! I think it's important that collectively we make sure they do get used to it! My next task is to keep watch of the fibroids and get good advice on my HRT which has probably been responsible for the failure of my fibroids to shrink after menopause. My GP has mentioned Livial (tibolone) as a synthetic hormone which does not feed fibroids but does all the other good things. But it has only been on the market here in OZ for 12 months, so I am not at all sure about that. I am currently on what is called bio-identical HRT, specially prescribed (by a doctor) and compounded according to my blood profile and symptoms. The regular doctors are very scathing about it but I feel very good on it and have been reducing the oestrogen content since I knew I had fibroids. I could simply have another ultrasound in 6 months and see how the fibroids are going. Perhaps I should go to a reproductive endocrinologist for advice? Any suggestions? So, what kind of doctor prescribed it? A naturopath? Cheryl
Guest guest
Not a naturopath, Cheryl, a regular GP. Have a look at Dr (The Liver Cleansing Diet) Cabot's web-site (I don't have the address in my head). By writing to Cabot or her site, you might be able to track down doctors in the US who use this. Cabot is very commercial and full of 'hype' though. But the bio-identical HRT works for me. I have to say that I have little confidence in either of the two doctors here in Sydney who have prescribed this to me and I haven't used them for general medical advice. They never enquired about fibroids or other contra-ndications. My GP says that this stuff isn't standardised or tested, but I don't know how much of this is blind prejudice.
