Guest guest
I know this is sort of a " taboo " subject on many lists, but I just have to respond to this from our personal perspective. We have 2 daughters, both 9 years old, who are deaf. One came from an orphanage at 6 years old with no language. One came from the US with a very sketchy background 10 months ago. We were very adamant SEE users in our home with the one born in an orphanage, and the other one came with ASL background. The SEE user has wonderful English order language and is a fluent reader, but has no concept of what she has read. The ASL user is an English teachers nightmare, but has a real grasp on the concept of what she has read. We are still SEE users, but have combined that with ASL. I still don't know what I would change, if anything, but know there has to be an answer out there somewhere. Maybe just the circumstances of their backgrounds have made them what they are, but it also could be that the conceptual ASL language is very important in understand language and communication. Please don't make this an ASL/SEE debate. I do not want to be responsible for that because I know how wonderful SEE is with a child who is diagnosed early as being deaf or hearing impaired. We are an English speaking family (all hearing) who thinks it is very important to have our children (deaf/hi) understand English. But also grieve over the lack of understanding on the part of one of our daughters. Any suggestions for language development out there that the school could use????
