Guest guest
, I took atkins vitamins cause frankly, the whole vitamin thing just confused the heck out of me. There are people who take multi-vitamins, I think 2 a day. I have been on it since mid May, but went off for a wedding and then on vacation my goal was to maintain my 10 pound loss and I did that by eating high carb, 1 meal a day for the 2 1/2 weeks I was on it. And I did just that!! Guest guest
Gayle, Welcome. If you feel you're in the right place, you probably are. There is quite a range of behavior in bp's, not all do the same thing or think the same way. When you look at SWOE, you will see a list of characteristics, and to be diagnosed, the bp only has to have some of them. Your daughter may be high-functioning - I hope so - but the insight you will gain from many people here should help you understand and deal with her even better than you do now. This board is about the parents of bp's, so it will not help you to " cure " her (which parents can't do), but how to cope in such a way that your family's quality of life is improved. Please keep posting. Perhaps some of your experience will help others as well. In many cases, there's an immediate change in symptoms - in other cases, it takes longer for something to manifest. And in some small portion of cases, there is no response. Guest guest
Hi Spencer, Welcome! I am Jodi.. Are you familiar with the " intro " phase of the diet? It really helps people get that kick start they need. It can be quite daunting but it really helped me. In fact when I first attempted the diet almost 7 years ago I jumped into all the foods and straight into the almond flour. Because of that I had no results. I just totally skipped over the intro phase. I only rediscovered the diet about 9 months ago. I wish I would of been smarter back then to give it a better look see. Could of avoided a heck of a lot of suffering. Here is a good explination; http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/beginners_guide/the_intro_diet2.htm or tinyurl; http://tinyurl.com/69hmn Another great site is PecanBread. Although more geared towards Kids and the ASD community it has some invaluable info on it including the " stages " or a guide of introducing food into the diet after the intro phase. This way we can all learn for ourselves what we can and cannot tolerate. For instance some people cannot eat carrots as that causes an increase in certain symptoms. Others, have no problem. While SCD is a wonderful diet some of us have to really learn with-in SCD what works and doesn't work. http://www.pecanbread.com/new/scdfoods1.html#beyond Also Kim M (whom I consider one of the resident experts on how to over-come Candida naturally has posted some great files) http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/BTVC-SCD/files/Candida%20or%20Yeast%20Infor\ mation/ I am unsure if it is totally relevant to your situation but I thought I would send you the link anyway. Also, Some people find jumping into the yogurt straight away can be an issue as well.. Some people have to take it very slow eating the yogurt. So if you feel very gassy or even tired or just out of the ordinary off you might need to ask about yogurt introduction. Many of us have much experience with that too. Always ask questions especially if you are unsure and as Marilyn says which makes me laugh " When in doubt leave it out! " Now if only I can follow those instructions myself!!! Guest guest
Almond butter is a very advanced food and should not be started at the beginning of the diet. Check out www.pecanbread.com for an introduction schedule. Of course, this is only a guide, but it was right on track for my body. I almost quit the diet early on because of almond flour goodies, not going through the introduction phase. Good luck to you Spencer!!!! The diet works miracles when done properly!!!! Guest guest
Good morning, I was approved to join the list last evening. I found out about the SCD on the CCFA site a week ago and ordered the book, two cookbooks, and a Yogourmet, knowing I had to try this before agreeing to injections the rest of my life. I immediately stopped drinking milk, eating sugars or grains until I could make the yogurt and chicken broth and formally start the diet, which is today. Even in making the changes before formally starting the diet I have noticed improvement - no more flatulence, less spasms, and 1/2 decrease in diarrhea even with 2/3 decrease in Imodium for which I am extremely encouraged. Spent yesterday cleaning out my kitchen of all illegals which produced both feelings of grief and excitement. My family and friends are being supportive though this hasn't directly effected any of them yet. I have read the book and read the beginning chapter twice but of course I have a few questions: 1) How much yogurt should be consumed each day? 2) I had a colectomy last September (sigmoid colon removed due to fistulas, cecum and 5 inches of ileum removed) and at that time was told I would likely have loose stools even if the crohns didn't return (which it already has). How do those of you that have had colectomy's measure symptom remission if you have been surgically altered and loose stools are expected? Thanks, CD diagnosed 1990 SCD, day 1! Guest guest
Hi , The symptom relief has come to me with less gas and bloating, less pain and more formed BMs instead of extremely watery. I had pretty consistent painful rashes around my anus, and those have cleared up. However, the process has been three steps forward, two steps back. So be prepared for some stops and starts along the way. Adding foods can be tricky and frustrating. I highly recommend that you stay with the starter diet until you notice an improvement, and be slow and deliberate about what you add. I also have a yogurmet. It works great, but get a dimmer switch for it at home depot or your local hardware store. The dimmer switch helps control the tempurature, as the yogurt maker tends to run hotter than is recommended. The dimmer switch has a cord that plugs into the wall, and then the maker plugs into the switch. It's about $10.00. I try to eat a lot of yogurt , a little for breakfast lunch and dinner. I add honey and now that I'm feeling a little better, a little fruit too. Ripe bananas are really good to add first when you feel ready. I also have been taking vitamin C and B complex-50. Be sure to read the list of additives that are illegal in supplements, it gets pretty tricky. There is a fabulous list of what is allowed and illegal on www.pecanbread.com. Good luck! Stay in touch. Guest guest
Hi , Just want to say "good for you"! The article on the CCFA website is not 100% positive--I think that's great that you could read between the lines and see that the SC diet might be something worth trying for you. Sorry I don't know the answers to your questions. I'm sure others will pipe in! Guest guest
, Glad to hear of your improvements. I have Crohn's and the SCD put it into remission in about 2-1/2 years. I had a couple of resections years ago of my ileum so I'm missing the ileocecal valve and have wondered along the same lines as #2 below. I've ranged from loose to constipated. My doctor said that it could be expected for me to be loose sometimes due to the missing valve. What really confirms the remission for me is that I don't have that very peculiar feeling pain in my lower right quadrant - the site where I've had Crohn's. I still get gas pains once in a while, but they feel quite different and pass when the gas does. On this diet, I had to relearn my body and what it was saying to me. I suspect you'll find a similar experience. Good luck and welcome to the fold. The article on the CCFA website is not 100% positive--I think that's great that you could read between the lines and see that the SC diet might be something worth trying for you.<< The reference I ran across was in regards to their printing an article on SCD in Take Charge. http://www.ccfa.org/about/news/scd Figured if it was total poppycock it wouldn't make it into the newsletter. The diet and nutrition section reference is not as positive. That led me to looking at the book on Amazon and discovering over 200 passionate entries regarding the diet. It's requiring quite a change in my thinking as I've been convinced by the current, 'complex carbohydrates are healthier', theory on nutrition. Also, I can become hypoglycemic so don't feel as though I can completely go without some source of carbs. Am going to take 3 California dates and 1/4 honeydew melon to work tomorrow. Neither of those foods has caused me problems in the past. Getting started on this diet is a huge amount of work and a major life change. Any time I have second thoughts I just pick up the brochure on the TNF inhibitor that the doctor recommended and start reading... ..
