They want me to email back with my personal information. Did it really come from Social Security? Answer: No. Social Security will not send you an email asking you to give us your personal information, such as your Social Security number, date of birth, or other private information. Beware of such scams — they’re after your information so they can use it. Sometimes a Social Security representative may contact you requesting information, but not by email. If someone saying they are from Social Security does email you requesting information, don’t respond to the message. Instead, contact your local Social Security office or call 1-. * * * * * * * * * * * * * IRS Issues Warning About Scammers The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers in Indiana and Kentucky about a new telephone scam. The IRS says the caller tries to fool people into thinking that the agency will issue them a tax refund and medical card if they provide some personal information. The caller is posing as an IRS employee. The scam begins like this: "All you have to do," says the scammer, ”Is provide some personal information." The scammer who is posing as an IRS employee, then, states that the IRS has a tax refund that will be issued each month for the next six months and that a medical card is also being sent for use by the entire family. The caller then proceeds to ask for bank account information. "Scammers are using tax refunds and medical cards as a hook to lure people into disclosing their financial information," said Jodie Reynolds, a spokesman for the IRS in Indianapolis The IRS urges people who get these questionable calls not to provide personal and financial information. You may report the fraudulent misuse of the IRS name, logo, forms or other IRS property by calling the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) toll-free hotline at 1- or visiting the USTREAS.gov/TIGTA. Is it still safe to drink? Yes, if it’s been properly stored. So what do those dates on your perishable foods actually mean? “ ‘Use by’ dates on food packages are intended for consumer use. For a product to be enjoyed at its best quality, it should be eaten before or by the date stamped on the package,” says Sari Greaves, a dietician in the Cardiac Health Center at Weill Cornell Medical College. “ ‘Sell by’ is used by supermarkets to determine the peak quality of the product. Products with ‘sell by’ dates can be consumed after that date if they have been refrigerated below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.” Save or toss? If you hate the thought of wasting good food, and the good money that is spent on it, don’t toss your milk and eggs on the “sell by” date. Milk is usually safe to drink until a week after the “sell by” date, and eggs are good for three to five weeks after you purchase them, even if the “sell by” date has come and gone, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Make sure you do a thorough inspection of your food or beverage of the “sell by” date has passed. “Discoloration such as mold or a sour smell indicate the food has spoiled and can make you sick, no matter what the date is on the label,” Greaves said. Getting your just-purchased perishables into a properly cooled refrigerator in good time is essential. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Reasons to Eat (At Least) An Apple A Day They’re slow food.
