Hi Lou,

Were the cancers all the same?? Like papillary?

Good luck to you...I pray everything (if it is positive)was

caught early.

I think there is some research into familial links with

papillary or follicular cancers... sure sounds like your family

has a tendency toward it....

Dr Ain or any others might be able to help you understand more

about any research into thyroid cancers.

Hi Lou,

Familial Papillary Thyroid Cancer, while supposedly

very rare, isn't very shocking to me at all because I

share this diagnosis with my siblings. There are four

of us. My mother has hashimoto's thyroiditis and a

multinodular goiter that has been biopsied as benign.

Both my grandparents on my mother's side have benign

multinodular goiters.

It hasn't been linked to environment - having grown up

in southern NY - west of the Hudson. Coincidentally,

west of Indian Point, a nuclear power plant. There

are no other instances like ours in our neighborhood

or even immeadiate area that we have heard of. A

radiologist my sister saw said he noticed a high rate

of thyroid cancer in the Hudson Valley, but who really

knows.

Regardless, hopefully your biopsy comes back as

benign. Best of luck.

Hi Lou,

I had my thyroid removed last summer and was diagnosed with

pap/foll/hurthle thyca, oh, and hashimotos also. My mother has had a

very large goiter for years as well as hashimotos. She had one dose

of RAI many years ago, but it only killed half of her thyroid, her

one side has grown into a very large goiter, which FNA has ruled

benign a few times. I went to her endo with her last fall, just to

sit and listen and learn. We did a 'reverse' family history and when

her endo learned of my recent thyca, he seemed to become more

concerned. She had another appt last week and he recommended that she

have her thyroid removed due to the increasing size and high antobody

activity. So, here we go down that road again. I worry about her more

than me. The surgeries were relatively easy for me, but her goiter is

enormous and I just don't know how she will get thru hypo hell if she

ends up going down that path.

- from NY too.

Thanks . I live very close to Storrs. Home of the best

women's basketball team in the Country, UConn!!!!!!

I am hoping that my biopsy will be negative but with my family

history it is hard to not worry about it. But either way I will be

facing surgery to have these nodules removed cancer or not.

My biopsy is not until June 14th so I have awhile to wait.

I hope everything goes well with your Mom. I know how concerned you

must be. When my daughter was diagnosed two years ago I was totally

shocked. She was only 27 years old at the time and had just gotten

married and had her first baby. The support we get from this group

is wonderful. We really have to educate ourselves and work with the

doctors regarding our health care decisions. The information we have

gotten from this board is invaluable. Prayers to you and your Mom.
