Census on AIDS Population. Statement at the Rajya Sabha

Rajya Sabha

Countrywide census of the number of persons suffering from AIDS is not technically viable. Annual sentinel surveillance is carried to estimate trends in HIV prevalence. The 2006 estimates released recently by the National AIDS Control Organisation are based on an expanded sentinel surveillance system and use of multiple data sources including National Family Health Survey-3. As per the results of the survey the estimated prevalence is 0.36% and the number of HIV infected persons between 2 million to 3.1 million.

The figures of males, females and children suffering from AIDS can be seen at Annexure-I. Separate figures for truck drivers and students are not available.

The State-wise number of deaths due to AIDS as reported by the State AIDS Control Societies can be seen at Annexure-II.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare, Smt. Panabaka Lakshmi in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
