I highly recommend taking Ibuprofen (Motrin, et.al) about 4-5 days BEFORE the expected onset of your period. Three times a day with meals during those days and then continue during your period, as needed for pain. The science behind this is, as Kisha mentioned is that ibuprofen (which is an antiinflamatory drug, but ALSO an anti-prostaglandin one, as well) helps reduce levels of prostaglandins in the bloodstream. Prostaglandins create the painful uterine muscular contractions (menstrual cramps). To get the full benefit of this drug (or any other NSAID) with your cramps, the secret is taking it faithfully (not haphazardly) every day for the four or so days PRIOR to your period. That way the level of antiprostaglandin in your bloodstream has a chance to build up-- even before your first cramp. Might help to write it down on your calendar to remember to take it at the right time. Furthermore, if you're like me and have aches and pains associated with PMS, ibuprofen seems to help there, too. The only caveat? Avoid alcohol and pay attention to possible gastric disturbances which can happen while taking any NSAIDs. My doctor prescribed Prevacid, which helps protect my stomach lining when I am taking these over-the-counter antiinflamatories. It works well for me. -Roma
