The oyster produces a precious, miraculous pearl, while our ovaries produce the precious, miraculous ovum. You want imagery?! All you art history majors (or in our case, is it art " hystery " majors)? out there: just imagine the painting " Creation of Aphrodite " (commonly referred to as " Venus on the Half Shell. " The oyster giving birth to Aphrodite has " ovary " written all over it-don't you think??! (unless that shell is supposed to be a clam! Ha! Ha!) There is also a very deliberate subtle sexual message here, as oysters have enjoyed the reputation of being an aphrodisiac. And, hell, we all know what a role our ovaries play in sexual desire! I'd enjoy hearing: " OY! That woman sure has got a pair of oysters! " Of course, if, one day " oyster " (for " ovary " ) becomes part of the vernacular, then entirely new lyrics might have to be written to the old Irish ballad " Molly Malone. " In the newly revised version, Molly Malone is still a fish monger in " Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty. " But now modern Molly is experiencing some (normal) mid-cycle ovarian pain while selling her crustaceans. (i.e, " . . . as she wheeled her wheel barrow through the streets broad and narrow, crying, " Cockles! and Mussles! My ovary, oh,oh .... oh!) -Roma (just a tad more crazy than usual, due to the the heat and PMS!)
