Hi everyone,

I have recently been asked to give a recipe in the Grain Free Gourmet cookbook

but I thought

it was wrong to do because of copyright laws. Before I send a formal response I

wanted to

make sure my understanding is correct. Thanks,

My understanding of US copyright laws is that technically, you cannot

copyright a recipe, as such. However, it has been the custom of the SCD

lists not to post recipes from SCD cook books without the permission of

the cook book author. It's a courtesy to the creative people on these

lists.

This is one reason, although I share my recipes freely, I ask that you do

not pass them on without proper attribution. I was quite angry at one

point to find that someone had taken several of my recipes and posted

them on a non-SCD website, to my exact phrasing of the directions, and

everything -- and had carefully removed all mention of Louisiana SCD

Lagniappe and my name from them before posting.

Yes, I completely understand. I ONLY asked because I wanted to make sure I was

doing

the right thing (seeing as how I am not very well versed in copyright laws). I

was

uncomfortable posting it, so I am glad that nobody suggested " bending the rules "

per se.

I agree that the people who have spent all the time, energy, creativity and

resources on

making the successful recipes should get all credit, both monitarily and with

verbal

recognition. I sent my reply apolgizing that i could not post the recipe due to

copyright

laws, and then highly recommended them buying the cookbook because it is a

wonderful

resource.

I personally can't wait for yours, Marilyn!! Being from the south and adoring

cajun food, i

have yet to figure out how to recreate most traditional recipes. We NEED you!!!

From my own experience owning a candle and soap business, as of about

five years ago, copyright laws were such that as long as the

information was altered at least 15 percent then you could. That being

said, legal and ethical are not always the same thing.
