Guest guest
Has anyone had pleurisy? If so, what made the pain stop? Anti-inflammatory drugs are doing nothing. How long did it take to get well?
Guest guest
Dear Lori: I have had pleurisy. It is terribly painful. I was in the hospital with pneumonia when I had it, and they gave me IV meds for it. The pain meds that they gave me helped the pain a bit. It took a couple of days for the pain to let up. Are you being treated? Any antibiotics or anything? I've been to the ER a lot of times with chest pain. Since I have so many health problems, any time I get chest pain I don't ignore it. Most of the time I've been diagnosed with costochondritis. Costochondritis is an inflammation of the junctions where the upper ribs join with the cartilage that holds them to the breastbone or sternum. I hope that you are able to get some relief! - PA Lori wrote: Has anyone had pleurisy? If so, what made the pain stop? Anti-inflammatory drugs are doing nothing. How long did it take to get well? How long did it take to get well? Lori, Pain medications helped me but every time I breathed, it hurt. Mine was from bruised ribs and it took it awhile to go away. (two weeks) Bennie Mayo Clinic article sates: Pleurisy causes include: • An acute viral infection, such as the flu (influenza) • Pneumonia, in those cases in which the infected portion of your lung involves the surface of the pleura • Autoimmune conditions, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune hepatitis • Tuberculosis and other infections • A clot in an artery of your lungs (pulmonary embolism) Pleurisy can also occur as a result of trauma to your chest or after heart surgery. Rib fractures also may cause pleurisy. It's possible to fracture a rib in the absence of trauma, such as from a severe cough. In some cases, the cause of pleurisy is unknown (idiopathic). My Dad gets it during Hay season when he hauls hay and seems to get the lining of his pluera irritated. Bennie
