Guest guest
I am no where near you in the lack of mobility department but I do not do stairs. First because of the real danger of falling and second because it wears out my knees more and causes more pain in my hips and knees. I have a bedroom downstairs and my pc is also downstairs. Thank goodness the bathroom is also downstairs. You might want to consider rooming downstairs to prevent that chance of falling. That way I only have to go down the stairs and then come back up once a day.
Guest guest
Dear Jeanette: I wish that I could set up our bedroom on the lower floor so that I didn't have to deal with the stairs, but it's impossible in the place that we are living. It's a 3 level town home. The bedrooms are on the top level, the living room/dining area and kitchen on the main level (open floor plan) and the lowest level is a walk out basement. I've only been in that basement about 6 times in the 9 months that we've lived here. The laundry is down there, but my husband has to do it. He brings the finished stuff up for me to fold. We are very lucky to have a bathroom on the main level and on the top level, so that I don't have to manage the stairs just for that. I only do the stairs once a day because they are so difficult. I am extremely careful, too. We have hand holds on both sides, which is a very good thing. I agree that it is terrible on the knees, especially my trashed knee. I've learned the rule, 'up leading with the good leg, and down leading with the bad leg.' There is a landing in the middle, too which helps. Since I wrote last, my husband set up our extra computer on the main level, which will be such a big help. I will be able to play my games and check my mail and stuff without having to come up here, which will be great! Happy New Year to me! I am excited to see how much of a difference it will make. - PA Jennette wrote: I am no where near you in the lack of mobility department but I do not do stairs. Guest guest
Have you considered one of those sit and ride things that goes on the stair rail? I can't remember what it's called, but they were advertising it on TV around here a while back. I only really remember because the " tag line " was SO ridiculous... " Do you fall often going up and down stairs? We have the cure, don't fall " . The first time I saw that, I was in SHOCK..it was SO .obnoxious, LOL. Then, of course, the commercial came on and showed that it was for the little seat that runs up a track on the stair rail... I didn't know they still made those, LOL Marta wrote: I wish that I could set up our bedroom on the lower floor so that I didn't have to deal with the stairs, but it's impossible in the place that we are living. Guest guest
Have you considered a stair lift chair? At least, you have a computer to use now. Honestly, I sleep on the couch now because the bed makes my shoulders and hips hurt too much. I'm looking for a nice daybed for my front front room. It has the wood burner and the other front room has the tv. When we bought this old house I was really looking forward to having a one story home after living with stairs for 5 years. Prior to that my home was one story and I loved it. We looked at another home that had all remodeled up and down stairs. Upstairs was two bedrooms and a third had been made into a very fine large bathroom. There was also a large room bathroom downstairs with kitchen, dining, living and a bedroom. This home was in better shape than the one we bought but was almost 20,000 dollars more asking price. I think we could have talked them down though. My husband fell in love with the barns here on the property we bought. I told him, if there's barns he can count on animals and we have animals here LOL. The other place had a perfectly good building that needed some work and some saplings cut down for a driveway. I would have been happier there I think, just because it was very wooded, in a valley and felt more like home to me. Now we are in open farm land with blustery winds nearly every day and I often remind him that we could have been sheltered by the hills and trees and shaded better in summer too. Oh well. I lost that time but I do have a horse here, finally. I didn't want to live out my days never having a horse. I'd had them all my life prior to getting hurt. Guest guest
Dear Marta: Before we moved from our house in NY, we were considering getting one of those stair lifts. But now we live in a rented town house. They said that if we wanted to, we could look into it, but come to find out, the open railings and angles that are meant to look modern, keep us from being able to have the rails. I'm not sure we're going to stay here after our year lease is up. I really love the location everything is within 10 minutes, including all of my doctors but, it will all depend on how long I can manage with the stairs. So far I've been hanging in there. - PA Have you considered one of those sit and ride things that goes on the stair rail?
