Guest guest
Dear : I always find it insulting when a doctor falls back on bullying me about my weight. After the last time I just won't allow it. So often we sit there with our heads down and somehow think it's OK for this stranger to berate us over something caused by the medications that they are giving us. Time to point out to him that your weight gain has been because of the meds that he prescribed. I sometimes wonder if it isn't all just a big convoluted circle. " Here, take these meds that will cause weight gain in anyone with the genetic propensity for overweight " then, " OK, now that you're fat, let's get you gastric bypass, which costs upwards of 10 to 20 thousand dollars. " I am well aware that there are those blessed few who do not gain weight from these drugs (steroids and many of the anti depressant meds), but most do and it is listed as a side affect on these drugs. The last time a doctor bullied me and pointed out to me that I am fat (like I hadn't noticed), I snapped. I SCREAMED at him. Afterward I felt like this big weight had been lifted off of my chest. The doctor apologized to me and we went on with our appointment. He still implied that he thought I was sitting around eating pizza all day, but when he got back my blood work that showed all of my cholesteral and triglycerids as 'normal' he expressed 'shock.' I said, 'I told you that I try very hard to eat right' So now he is really trying to find something to help with my blood sugar. No doctor should ever dismiss you with something like 'go get gastric bypass and call me in the morning.' Shame on him. He should be referring you to an orthopedic or neurologist to see if they can find the reason for your pain. There are so many spinal issues that can cause pain in the legs. You could have a pinched nerve. If he persists in going on about your weight, find another doctor. Best of luck, - PA I went to see my doctor today as I'm having a really bad flare up in my left leg and it's really getting me down. The doctor wants me to slowly work my way up from 60mg to 120mg of cymbalta. I was talking about my weight and he said to think about having a gastric band, the thing is will it be a good idea to have or would it be a waste of time as it's the tablets that's making me gain weight.
