I tried hypnosis for pain back in the mid-90's. The practitioner was a

PhD psychologist. He made cassette tapes during our sessions, with the

idea being to play back the tapes at home. I had five sessions. All

were pretty similar.

During the sessions, he put me under hypnosis and then used suggestions

to implant the idea in me that the pain itself was " just out of reach " .

The results weren't very good. I found that I woke up from hypnosis

feeling extremely relaxed but that the pain was still in easy reach.

As with all advice you read about here, your own results may vary.

Perhaps the mental imagery used now is different.

I took the class for self hypnosis. It does help with the pain. I don't know if

being hypnotized by another person would help or not. I do know that self

hypnosis does work for many things and in many areas.

just throw away but gosh if it works it would be so worth it.

Hi Becky

For people who can be hypnotized in those groups, the ones that I know,

report relief from their pain. Unfortunately, they also tell me that

the relief didn't last.

I am one of those control freak people who cannot be hypnotized. I've

have two friends who are psychiatrists, who do a lot of hypnotherapy.

Over the years, both of them have tried unsuccessfully, to even get me

into a light hypnotic state. I also went to one of those

hypnotherapists that entertain while they work. The three people I went

with, were quite cooperative. I watched with amazement as they did all

sorts of daft things.

I'm a big fan of behavioural therapies. Cognitive, Biofeedback, etc.

are things that I have utilized over the years. They don't make the

pain go away, but they keep me from getting genuinely upset by it.

However, my head pain has reached the point now, that I really wish I

could have successful hypnotherapy. Even a couple of weeks worth of

" relief " would be wonderful.

Do you have health care that will at least partially pay for you to see

a psychiatrist trained in hypnotherapy? Since psychiatrists are also

medical doctors, they can be a great help to people with chronic pain.
