Guest guest
>The enteric coating breaks down in a non-acidic environment. I didn't know this, but it makes sense. We were always told that it didn't matter what you put the enzymes in as long as you swallowed them right away and didn't leave them sitting in the food. This also makes sense because after they are swallowed they go to the same place as all the food (acidic and non-acidic) anyway. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
Guest guest
I got my info. from Orenstein's book. The enteric coating is to get the enzymes through the stomach and into duodenum before they break down. The stomach has an acidic environment, but I guess if you ate a bunch of non-acidic food it might interfere. The duodenum has a non-acidic environment. Guest guest
Hmmmm, maybe thats why Mallory was diagnosed with Duodenitis at age 3 months? (which totally shocked the GI at that time--he said that a baby's duodenum shouldn't look like that) Maybe something about malabsorption messes up the duodenum? That endoscope was before CF diagnosis...and long before enzymes. Just curious, have any other CF kids had endoscopes and had duodenitis?
