Guest guest
I'm Terri and I was just dx'd with type 2 this past week. I'm so confused on everything!! I've been put on a max of 50 grams of carbo a meal and a little more 1,200 calories a day. I bought a carb book but it has only confused me more, when it comes to meat(beef mostly) what is better?? Are grilled hamburgers o.k.??? I just seemed so depressing going to the grocery store today,it seems so many more no's the yes's out there. Any wisdom anyone has would be great to hear. Oh,for now its diet and exercise to try and control my BG. Thanks Terri
Guest guest
i'm on 60 gm of carbs a meal. i do find that i do better when i cut that in half, but the dietitian had reasons (and for the life of me, i can't tell you), which is why i said i will probably flunk and repeat. pat > 50 grams of carbs per meal sounds like a lot even to me, and I'm more of a > moderate carb person. Guest guest
well, that's my confusion, too. the doctor told me (i swear he did) to cut down the protein, because i was gaining. i'm almost sure the dietitian said that the meat and vegies were fine, and that things that didn't have carbs did not need to be counted, but that does not make sense, because if i ate 3-4 large steaks every meal, i would be 500 pounds. so, i'm with you, i need to get back to the gal, and probably start all over again, and just try to blot out all the stuff i've put there mistakenly. and i think i need to take notes on that much better than i did. pat > my BG after 2hrs was 120 so I didn't > think that was too bad. Guest guest
Hi, Terri, welcome to the list, sorry you had to join us but you'll get good advice here. I understand your confusion. Diabetes is a very complex disease and there's a lot to learn and at the beginning it can be overwhelming. I'd suggest you check out the links at the bottom of the page called " Bookmarks for Newbies. " IMHO, the absolutely best book you can read right now is the Gretchen Becker book. The exact title (it's long and I don't remember it right offhand) is in the Books for Newbies section. It's specifically written for newly diagnosed type 2s. Yes, of course you can eat hamburger. Meats, chicken, fish -- all of these are virtually carbless. What you want to stay away from are any products made with grains -- breads, cereals, pasta, and of course cakes, cookies, and sweets. Rice will also raise your BGs, as will potatos. Here's a list of veggies you can eat without problems: spinach cauliflower broccoli summer squash (zucchini, crookneck) spaghetti squash mushrooms asparagus greenbeans cabbage sauerkraut avocados lots of salad! Good luck. Ask any questions -- we're here to share our experience. Guest guest
Oh yes... I forgot the MOST IMPORTANT piece of advice -- lots of testing! Test before each meal...test one hour after and two hours after. Also test before and after exercise (you are exercising, aren't you??) ...and test when you get up in the morning - even before you get out of bed -- and before you go to sleep. And write everything down. This is a lot of testing but it will give you good information, i.e. how different foods affect your body. Some diabetics can eat more carbs than others with no ill effect but the only way you know is by testing. So get a good meter and make friends with it and use it a lot. Guest guest
One ounce seems pretty stringent...it's only a bite or two. I think this must have more to do with weight loss than diabetes, Terri. However, if you decide to cut down your carbs you can eat more normal portions and still lose weight. Trust me. Guest guest
Hi Terri! I'm Kim and I was diagnosed with Type II a little over a month ago. I'm on a 1500 calorie a day meal plan and I'm allowed 7 servings of carbs a day, but I don't eat all of them. You will find some great support on this list and a lot of different opinions, but everyone will agree that you have to find out what works for you and test, test, test. There's a great book out there called " Type II Diabetes: The First Year " (or something like that) that is an excellent resource. Although some here are on very-low and almost-no carb meal plans, probably the best thing to do (in my never-to-be-humble opinion) is to start with the plan you were given and see how it works for you. 50 grams of carbs per meal sounds like a lot even to me, and I'm more of a moderate carb person. Personally I have learned in my short time of dealing with T2 that I can eat most anything in very small portions, but I have to work it into my meal plan by either leaving something else out or exercising more to burn off the extra carbs. So try not to look at the food world in terms or yesses or nos or you'll go nuts thinking about everything you can't eat anymore. If I know I can have some if I want it badly enough, I'm fine. Having said that, I will say that once I got past the first few days of restricted carbs, I felt much better and the cravings for the " bad " stuff were much less. The first few days I felt terrible! Do you know what your test results were that caused your diagnosis? My HbA1c was 7.1. I'm due for a repeat test in September and I'm hoping for something in the 6's and maybe even a high 5 (but I doubt it). I lost 10 pounds very quickly after my diagnosis but I still need to lose about 50 or more pounds. Welcome! Guest guest
Thanks! I think its having to count everything that has confused me,now a days it doesn't take much to do that either,LOL! Now I love steak and plain old chicken, but I'm confused on how much. On the one list I was given it said 1 once,I cut the steak I had tonight in half, weighted it and it was still like 3oz. Well I cheated and ate it anyways,I didn't have lunch so...my BG after 2hrs was 120 so I didn't think that was too bad. Does cutting back on the meat have to do with weight loss or the diabtes?? I think that is were my confusion has come in. I will have to give the dietitian( I think that is who she was)that I saw last week and ask more questions and take notes!! Thanks for the welcome. So, that 60g of carbs you eat at a meal can cause a 180 to 300 point rise in bg levels that your body has to deal with. Since you are diabetic, your body is not able to deal with high blood sugar levels. The question to ask the dietitian is " Since I am trying to keep my bg level down, why are you forcing me to eat so many carbs that will drive it up? " . With diabetes, carbs are the problem and yet patients such as yourself are still being prescribed these high levels in their diets. Doesn't make sense to me at all. I have been low-carbing now for 4 1/2 years and am able to control my bg's in the " normal " range (70-110mg/dl and HbA1c <6.0%) with diet and " not enough exercise " . Diabetes is one of the few conditions that the patient really can do something about (and must). You must do the research and find what works for your body to control your bg levels. Do not take what you learned in the " class " as gospel. Check it out for yourself. I know its a pain, but it is worth the effort. , Average bg 100, HbA1c 5.6%, tweeked " Bernstein " diet plan Oregon

I have been struggling with diabetes for 25 years and have had some ups and downs too...(physically and mentally). I am sure you've had explanations of what lipids and bg are so won't start there. Even the ins and outs of knowing how to use this group are a challenge!!!. I just want to say that You , are doing well to ask questions and listening. Sounds > wasteful, but it really helps and THAT IS WHAT IS > IMPORTANT. Here's what I do when I eat out at a restaurant: I look at the total meal and decide how much of each item I should have. Then I physically separate those portions from the rest, and slide the rest to the side of the plate out of the way. Then I slowly enjoy the appropriate portions. In this way, I can work in small amounts of foods I really love and miss, like mashed potatoes. I can eat 1/2 cup of them with no problem, but might be tempted to eat " just one more bite " if I didn't divide them ahead of time. Sometimes, if I tell the waiter that I'm diabetic and restricted regarding starches, he or she will arrange for a little larger portion of green vegetables and a smaller portion of starch to begin with, or will allow me to make a substitution of another vegetable in place of the rice or potatoes served with most meals. I use this same method with the meats - I approximate 4 ounces or whatever, cut it off and set the rest aside before I take a bite. I find that restaurants usually serve way too much of everything except vegetables, so this helps manage the portion sizes into a better balance. Regarding the leftovers, I either leave them behind or bring back a doggy bag, literally to give to the office mascot, an ancient golden retriever who does not have a weight problem, LOL! That's good thinking, Christy :-) I couldn't even tolerate a half cup, though... I've tried measuring out 1/2 cup at home, and it does bad things to my blood sugar. I don't really miss them that much. I do miss bread... crusty Italian bread, dipped in olive oil, but even if I could tolerate a small amount, I'm not sure I'd stop with one piece.... before I knew it, I'd have eaten several pieces. I usually just ask the waitress to put the basket of bread across the table -- by my husband. Sometimes, he'll say he doesn't want the bread either. What a guy!
