Guest guest
" seems to help only a little bit " Probably because it wasn't pain. Emma cried when any casts were applied to her feet, even the ones the Shriners put on that hardly turned her feet at all. The Shriners did once put a cast where the foot slipped slightly. We knew something was wrong then because she cried differently and became lethargic. Sure enough a bruise had formed on the top of her foot. The first time Dr. Ponseti manipulated Emma's foot he stretched it much, much farther out than the Shriners people ever did and she was smiling and cooing all through it. Obviously the stretching caused no pain! Once he started applying the casts she cried. Some children don't cry through any of it. Why are you so bent on discrediting Ponseti and his method? Guest guest
I am most certainly NOT bent on discrediting Ponseti. He does quite well himself with comments such as " the French Technique causes pain in some babies " . He should have kept his comments to himself and been professional. Guest guest
There is an entire page of people posting about the discomfort. I just referenced that one. It would make sense to me that the child would ache and experience discomfort. A clubfoot that is rigid and difficult to yield under manipulation will be gently forced and stretched. Then it is held in this isometric position. Sort of like the same achiness and discomfort a child experiences when their braces are tightened. Jody Re: 1st casting with Dr. Tuck in Md. Guest guest
How does his opinion about the French method discredit himself or his own method? It's just his opinion. Guest guest
The pain would be most intense upon the initial stretching, not for hours after. And since children generally don't cry during the intial stretching or after the casts are applied, it suggests that there is no pain. Temperment has probably alot more to do with a child's reaction to the stretching and casting. I'm getting out of this discussion, you're only interest seems to be to discredit this method because of the comments of a few about the French method. Re: Re: 1st casting with Dr. Tuck in Md. Guest guest
Comments of a few? This site addresses itself as a French and Ponseti site, but it seems that there is always some French bashing or statistic citing to discredit it. It is aggrivating and discouraging. I will not back down this time. Sorry if I am harsh, but that is the way it is. Jody Re: 1st casting with Dr. Tuck in Md. Guest guest
" The 70 degree rotation is neither " painful " nor " unnatural " for a baby (which, I believe has been asserted ad nauseum so let us please put that to rest once and for all), in fact, Emma can turn her feet past 70 degrees on her own during certain activities. " Actually it is unnatural. A normal foot can only hyperextend to 40-45 degrees. That includes a baby foot. An unbiased book on the infant skeletal system will support this. And I shovel the last load of dirt on that grave. Jody Re: 1st casting with Dr. Tuck in Md. Guest guest
I sprained my ankle during spring break. It hyperflexed way in and I fell. It smarted when it happened, but I was able to hike the remaining 1 1/2 miles down the mountian we were on. The real pain did not start until hours later....so much that that next morning I went in and had it x-rayed. Epinephrine is a funny thing. Jody Re: 1st casting with Dr. Tuck in Md. Calling Dr. Ponseti a hypocrite is not going to dispose people to listen to you. Expressing your opinion in this way, you're not going to be a very effective advocate for your method. A.
