Guest guest
Effie, I am 43 and was diagnosed 2 years ago. I am assymptomatic with intramurals as far as ultrasounds could tell me. The past year and a half I had those heavy 5 to 7 days and past clots the size of small animals, no spotting, just a belly that makes me look 3 months pregnant. The last 5 months the clots have stopped. My period immediatly changed to 3 days max and the lightest pad is a panty liner. Yes, I went soy and water cheese but eat more grains, nuts, .....maybe be menapause, could be I'm doing something right. Robin
Guest guest
I've had long and heavy periods all my life, typically lasting 7 days with the second, third and fourth day being the heaviest. In December last year (when I was 48) the periods suddenly became lighter and shorter. Before, the cycle was textbook regular every 28-29 days. Now it is textbook regular but four days shorter. And the period itself is shorter, only four days, with the second day the heaviest, and the other days very light. it could be the onset of menopause, of course (I am 49) but I have no other symptoms. The shorter cycle puzzles me, but the amount of " bloodless days " seems to have stayed the same. FWIW, Effie Andrée Wiltens. Guest guest
Patty- I have found no method to the madness. For a long time, I had fibroids that were obvious from the bulge in my belly, but without symptoms. Then I had an ultrasound...three days later I got a period of heavy clots that lasted 21 days-needless to say I was terrified-thought that the bleeding would never stop. But it did. The doctors yelled " Hysterectomy " I too declined. I too was anemic. The next cycle was light, like you described and I thought, " Whew, home free " The next month was also brief and light. But, no that did not last as I then bled for 33 days, followed by a ten day reprieve and here I am bleeding again for 18 days in a row and it's still happening. From what I gather, those light cycles just give the uterus an opportunity to build up the blood in the lining and then the clots come streaming out. So, it makes life very unpredictable! Keep me posted on what happens with your bleeding. Cyn

Guest guest
Yes, several (at least two large ones, one smaller and possibly more small ones). I look as if I'm five or six months pregnant. The big belly is my only discomfort. Guest guest
Cyn, That sounds awful! I don't know what to expect next month. My stomache is a little larger than it should be, but not bad. As far as I know I just have the one fibroid. Have you had any procedures done at all? Are you any where near menopause? When mine has been heavy, I have had to wear the overnight pads (about 4 of 5 of them at once) and it's so unbearable especially when I am at work and never know what is going to happen. Guest guest
Hi Patty, I'm 48 and was diagnosed in '97 with intramural fibroids. I chose to watch and wait. Spotting in between and heavy bleeding were the first symptoms. I had a hysteroscopy and D & C, numerous blood tests and colonoscopy/endoscopy - all else is ok - was treated for anaemia and that is under control now. I didn't change much of anything except more exercise. I have had ultrasounds every year to watch the growth. Almost a year ago my periods became erratic and I missed three, also bleeding became much lighter - my bulk symptoms better and I don't have to get up in the middle of the night anymore, also hot flushes off and on. So needless to say I was really curious as to what was happening - so I had my hormone levels tested too - but showed not in menopause yet. My largest fibroid has grown from 7.2 to 7.8 cms in this year with some calcification showing - I have another two small ones that have grown from 2cms to 3 at the same time ( in 97 I just had the one, that they could see, at 6cms). The US technician did tell me that it is possible that I have had others that they didn't detect behind the large one etc) that may have caused the worse conditions I had three years ago. Also apparently fibroids can make your periods irregular too. So who knows - I am feeling generally pretty good so will stay in w & w for awhile longer. By the way my periods have returned to clockwork again (basically 24 hrs heavy then 1-2 days light) - the past 4 months now - BUMMER! - but not unbearable if I keep up with my iron intake. Wish I knew what to expect too.... Mandy >I'm 45 and was diagnosed with a fibroid about 2 years ago. I had started spotting in between periods and went in and that's how they found it. Of course, the first thing I was told was that I needed to have a hysterctomy. I declined and have just been suffering with heavy bleeding. I'm more afraid than anything else to have surgery. My ferritin level was an 8 and so they told me to try a multi-vitamin with extra iron and that has seemed to help. My level went up to 14. Usually I get my period every 25 to 28 days and it ususally lasts anywhere from 7 to 10 days. The 2nd & 3rd day are the heaviest, then it tapers off. Well, I got my period last Sun, just like I should have and I couldn't beleive it...I have never had a period like that. It was so light, not heavy at all. It only lasted 5 days. Does this seem possible? I am wondering if I could be starting to go through menopause? They had checked my blood last time I was in and said I wasn't starting yet. The night sweats were because my ferritin level was low. I'm anxious to see how next month goes. I also go in to the Dr the beginning of Oct., supposedly when my period comes. Has anyone had this happen? Thanks! Patty<
Guest guest
Hi! I am 46 and had same symptoms as you guys and was not a surgical candidate for hysterectomy as too obese in the abdomen so opted for UAE and boy am I happy I did!!! Totally resolved the bleeding episodes, cramps and clots!!!! I actually go 5 days, 1-3 tampons and NO CRAMPS! NO CLOTS! I used to have " chicken liver " clots and horrible cramps that would make my legs weak, thighs ache and quiver! Now, 4 months post UAE...I have had 4 normal periods like a teenager! Please consider UAE to stop all that horrible bleeding. It worked on me! You probably have what I had to cause all that bleeding and that is lots of submucosal & intramural fibroids. Submucosal are the culprets on excessive bleeding......and it all stopped immediately on me! Normal intervals of periods (never changed, always been regular) but now no 1/2 months marathon length bleeding! Just 5 days!!! Ask to speak to an IR and look on internet for fibroid embolization. Good luck, Gaelicgal > > Patty- > > I have found no method to the madness. For a long > > time, I had fibroids that were obvious from the bulge > > in my belly, but without symptoms. Guest guest
Hello, I am new to the group and wanted to share my experience with fibroids. I can identify with 'wytwytch_1999@... '. Here is a little of my background. I am 40 yrs old, a mother of three (24, 19 & 13), grandmother of 2 (4 and 4 mos). My mother is the oldest of 11: all 8 of the girls have had either a full or partial hysterectomy. I started having serious pains and problems with fibroids in 1996 and my gyn (who was also my mother's, 2 of my aunts, my oldest daughter's, my baby sister's and 2 of my cousins gyn) started discussing the hysterectomy option. No pressure for surgery, he just knew my family history. I am the oldest of 5; both me and my baby sister opted not for a hysterectomy but had UAE done. Mine in September of 1999 and hers in February of 2000. I did not want surgery, so we tried pain medications with diet & exercise, birth control pills, Depo-Provera, Lupron, etc.. In 1998, he mentioned this new procedure UFE done by an Interventional Radiologist. Even though, I was in so much pain, I still considered this surgery. My husband could not understand how somebody could bleed like that all of the time; cause sometime 'us women just use it as an excuse not to have sex. " I too had " chicken liver " clots and those pains would literally take your breath away and passing out was a relief. The decision breaker came in August of 1999, when after taking more pain pills than you should, my 10 yr old daughter caught me still hurting and still suiting up in my bulky pads and DEPENDS and girdle. Since she knew a little about me and her grandmother and aunts, and her 21 year old sister was also starting to complain about the same things, she was worried about her. I called my gyn that day, met with the IR the next morning, begin all the prep work for surgery that next week. Also, since I am allergic to Penicillin and Codeine, they had to make sure that I was given the right antibiotics and pain meds. I only regret that I had not had this done when he first mentioned it. I read where some of the ladies were asking about the size of the fibroids. My 5 largest ones ranged in size from a lemon to a grapefruit. The heavy bleeding, cramps, clots, pre-menstrual headaches are GONE. I went from 12 days on full force/4 days normal/2 days of spotting then 7-9 day off. I now spot 1/2 day with 5 normal to light days. I have been regular like this, every 21 days, since November of 1999. My sister and I used to tell every women, married man, engaged girl, whoever would stop long enough to listen how good we now feel. NO PAIN, NO CLOTS, NO BULKY PADS. And sex went back to the way it should be - GOOD, GOOD and OH, SO GOOD!! I recently started back wearing tampons, which I had not worn or bought since about 1993. The only side effect that I had was about a week after I got home was explained to me as an unsuccessful fibroid expulsion. One of those kinda pear shaped fibroids was disintegrating and trying to pass out the vagina, but still attached somewhere. I was getting dressed for my first day back to work and was having pains kinda like early stages of labor and felt this 'tissue' hanging. I got scared, started to pray & cry, and made my husband look and see what it was. We called my gyn, who told us to come to the hospital. He explained what it was, gave me some pain medicine and removed the fibroid, which was too large for the regular specimen jar. It kinda felt like and resembled a regular pap exam. For those women who are in North Eastern Louisiana, my gyn is Dr. Caire, and the IR who performed our UAE is Dr. Boyette. I just had my annual exam on 09/16, and was looking at this month's issue of 'heart & soul' and found the article on Fibroids: pp 84 - 86 go thru the different symptoms, treatments and support groups. Page 22 is asking for research about family members that have or had fibroids. My sister and I are seeing about participating in this. Please consider UFE/UAE. It may not work for every woman, but it worked on me and my sister. I apologize for being so long and wordy, but I got started and couldn't stop. God's Blessing OverFlowing! Thanks and Have A Blessed Day Today & Pass IT On! The Next Person Just Might Need It! Re: Has anyone had this happen? Hi! Guest guest
So glad to hear the happy ending. My husband, too, has been not understanding how " somebody could bleed like that all of the time; cause sometime 'us women just use it as an excuse not to have sex'. " Well, now one week post-UAE, I think he's finally in for a time of happy surprises. I wish I had only done this sooner, and known long ago that it would not take a hysterectomy for me to be feeling back to normal. I thank my lucky stars that I took the time to step back and learn about UAE before agreeing with my previous gynecologist to a hysterectomy. (And, yes, 'previous' means I've found someone better suited to the job.) Ellen
