Meds for Break Through Pain

Hi All

I take a number of meds for chronic RSD / muscle spasm, etc, caused by jaw

surgery: muscle relaxant, anti-anxiety med, anti-depressant, lamictal (helps

with nerve problems and mood), etc. Over the years, I've been off pain meds

completely and tried a variety of pain meds. Right now I take oxycontin (80 mg 2

x a day) and oxyfast for breakthrough.

Oxyfast is a liquid form of oxycodone. It gets into the system quickly. It is

the most effective " breakthrough " medication I've tried. The only thing that

has worked better is oral fentanyl. However, that's almost impossible to get

(at least in the US) and if you can, the price is much too high. I've also tried

liquid morphine for breakthrough. It makes me nasaeuas, sleepy and doesn't help

the pain, so we went back to oxyfast.

I've tried tramadol before. I have not had success with it when my pain is at an

8-9-10 level. It does not seem to get anywhere near the pain. It might help if

the pain were lower.

We're getting some nice weather days here in the DC area. I'm lucky to be able

to get out and walk in the woods with our active and noisy cocker spaniel. On

those days, I take time to savor the sight of her streaking across the hills,

chasing her ball and splashing in the stream. It doesn't make the pain go away,

but it always puts a smile on my face.
