I know what you mean when you say that there are answers to be had hear that would not be mentioned in places like public gatherings, etc. Bill, When I was younger (YEARS AGO), I worked in the medical field and always wondered why the older people talked about their bowel problems. Well, here I am knowing full well why and if you ever have an impaction, it becomes a real problem. I keep an enema kit in my cabinet and they are not discussed very much. When I was in the hospital after my fusion, I did not have a bowel movement and they were giving me medications for a movement but after three days, a nurse said, give her an enema. Well, being a nurse myself, I gave myself my enema, till it was all clear. Hard fecal material can back up the rest of the fecal material and until it is softened, and moved out of the way, the other cannot get out. So, this is a subject that is not discussed in public but never let yourself go without a bowel movement for long periods as I had an impaction and when they gave me medication to start peristalsis (movement) I thought I was having another baby. So, this is a necessary discussion topic and I understand why people talk about it. It is a relief getting the toxins out of your system and not waiting for a bowel movement because you do not know what things help constipation. The members here have many suggestions that will work and they understand. Bennie
Guest guest
I agree. This is a common problem with many of us that take pain medication. I take a stool softener as soon as I notice that I am not have a regular bowel movement. I have IBS also which adds another concern if my system if not running properly. I have found that eating yogurt daily helps. I know this is an issue that people don't like to talk about, but it is a function everyone does. Bennie, i know what you mean about the hospital giving you stuff to help you move your bowels after your surgery. I remember having to drink mineral oil after every meal after my children were born. That stuff was so wicked tasting and slimmy going down! But it did work. Gentle hugs to all, Tami > Bennie wrote: > So, this is a subject that is not discussed in public but never let yourself go without a bowel movement for long periods as I had an impaction and when they gave me medication to start peristalsis (movement) I thought I was having another baby. Tami, Someone else eluded to this but also, Nurses know that have had to go and " remove impactions " . It is okay to do this yourself by gently manipulating hard stool in your rectum and remove it with your fingers. This is something I bet no Doctor ever told you and before being in the medical field, I did not touch my body. You must examine yourself for skin cancers, any changes in your breasts, feet, or other parts of your body to identify problems. I was given Milk of Magnesia or Castor Oil when I misbehaved when I was young. I guess they thought my irritable acts were because of consitpation, but I cannot stand the taste of them as an adult : ) Yogurt has acidolphilus that is a healthy bacteria that enhances the flora of the colon.
