Hello anyone with some advice........I've just been diagnosed with

Papillary Cancer (Follicular Variant) and am preparing for surgery on

August 9th. My situation is this: I'm 36 yrs old, female, the

nodule is on the right side and is about 2.0 cm in diameter.

Both my endocrinologist and the surgeon are pushing for a total

thyroidectomy. The doctors give you all kinds of logical reasons why

a total should be done but I have come across literature (Cancer

Control, May/June 2000, vol 7, no. 3)that shows that for low risk

patients (under 45 yrs, <3.0 cm, and low-risk tumor= papillary) that

a total thyroidectomy has no fundamental basis.

I am just wondering if anyone has a similar story to share or a

strong argument why I shouldn't just do the hemi...? As the doctor

in the article I am referring to said: " An operation not worth doing

is not worth doing well. "
