Guest guest Posted July 20, 2002 Report Share Posted July 20, 2002 Hello anyone with some advice........I've just been diagnosed with Papillary Cancer (Follicular Variant) and am preparing for surgery on August 9th. My situation is this: I'm 36 yrs old, female, the nodule is on the right side and is about 2.0 cm in diameter. Both my endocrinologist and the surgeon are pushing for a total thyroidectomy. The doctors give you all kinds of logical reasons why a total should be done but I have come across literature (Cancer Control, May/June 2000, vol 7, no. 3)that shows that for low risk patients (under 45 yrs, <3.0 cm, and low-risk tumor= papillary) that a total thyroidectomy has no fundamental basis. I am just wondering if anyone has a similar story to share or a strong argument why I shouldn't just do the hemi...?
