Guest guest
, I found a similar word--cystolithalopaxy--in the On-Line Medical Dictionary at http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/omd?cystolithalopaxy but nothing at the Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary site. Using Google to search, I found 29 pages using " cystolitholapaxy " and 3 using " cystolithalopaxy. " It's not in my Dorland's or Mosby's. Please let us know what it turns out to be or if you have found another Stedman's error. Guest guest
Yup! (good english there, right? LOL). I remember it as a surgical procedure that I scheduled when I worked in the O.R. It's the crushing of a bladder stone and 'sucking' the remnants through a catheter . Ramona raleeii@... Hi guys, I am adding words to my word expander (completely from scratch) and have come across a word I haven't heard of before. I thought at first it was a typo, but it is listed in Stedman's GI/GU word book. I haven't been able to find it in any of my dictionaries. " Cystolitholapaxy " is the word. Anyone heard of it and know what it means? Thanks.
Guest guest
Hi Ramona, So it is a word! Thanks for the info. By the way, someone who had taken over the QuickScript contacted me through email and offered an updated program for $69.95, but you still have to get the code through them. Not me! I am not going through that again. I had bought the MAX brain system that was supposed to revolutionize my transcribing some time ago. That kind of went by the wayside, but the basis of a word expander was there. So it works the way I want it to, but I have to input all the abbreviations in it. That's okay. I don't have to spend any more money, and I don't go back to school until Monday, so I have the time to do that. Later, Re: Word Yup! (good english there, right? LOL). Guest guest
and Ramona, Are y'all able to document the correct spelling? What with Stedman's having been found to contain occasional errors, I'd want something independent to verify which authority (Stedman's or the On-Line Medical Dictionary) had the correct spelling. Guest guest
According to my Stedman's GI/GU, the lady I work for who has been doing urology for the past 10 years, and the urologist it would be cystolitholapaxy. I think Stedman's was originally spelling it -alopaxy but then corrected it to -olapaxy. Plus, lith(o) would be the correct combining form, not lith(a)-- according to Dorland's. Oh, just looked under lith(o) in Dorland's and it does show litholapaxy. LOL! I don't know why I didn't think to look there first instead of taking the long way around it. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Thanks, Monika, That's good research. Cystolitholapaxy it is! I have e-mailed the On-line Medical Dictionary to tell them that they have a misspelled word. Now that you have pointed out " litholapaxy, " I notice two things: (1) Litholapaxy can be documented in many places, including Sloane's Medical Word Book and Dorland's and (2) cystolitholapaxy and litholapaxy have the same meaning: crushing a bladder stone and washing it out through a catheter. Perhaps since cystolitholapaxy is redundant, the more common current usage is of litholapaxy. Third thing I have noticed: I can now spell and define " cystolitholapaxy " and " litholapaxy. " A day in which one learns a new word is a good day! Guest guest
.....and it is listed in Taber's too. I hadn't mentioned that I found it there, because it's listed as litholapaxy and not cystolitholapaxy. It's so fun when we learn new words, isn't it? Ramona raleeii@...
