Lori-

Congrats!! I wish you the best of luck. It's hard at first, but I am

at 2 1/2 years, and don't regret my decision for a minute. I am a

completely different woman (and according to some- too egotistical,

but hey! I deserve it!)

Hi all,

I am new to this group, my name is Barb and I was dx'd with

thyroid cancer in August of 97. I have been cancer free for about 4

years now. I was pretty excited to find this web site for us

survivors and their families. I live in a small town in Nebraska. I

haven't as of yet met any other survivors.

Hi,

I am new in the group as of today and I have been diagnosed with

Papillary Carcinoma..I guess the most common thyroid cancer. I have an

appointment with a surgeon next Monday. The nodule is only about 7mm.

I am hoping that it can be taken care of just by removing the thyroid. I

would have never found it this early if I didn't just get over a mild

case of Epstein Barr Virus. Because my doctor was checking my glands in

my neck is when he came across the small nodule on my thyroid. This is

all to strange for me because I am a very healthy person. Yes I have had

my share of alot of stress and I know that I can manage it much

differently than I ever have before. I was going through alot of soul

searching about how I can heal myself. I am a very spiritual person and

I know that when you believe in something anything is possible. I am

also a single mom of a wonderful 6 year old little girl and I want to be

around for a very long time!

I have been through the run of emotions from tremendous fear to a

feeling of calm knowing that I am going to be just fine. I would love

to talk with others who have been through it and maybe you can shed some

light on what it was like for you. I know that the anticipation is

scary for me however I have been told that the surgery isn't so bad...Is

that true???

Thank you,

Hi ,

I am glad you found your way to this support group. It really has

helped me tremendously. I too have Papillary Carcinoma. I was

diagnosed with this on 7/29/02 and my surgery takes place on

8/27/02. I am also a very spiritual person. I find that without my

spirituality I would be lost. I bet you are scared with a 6 year old

and being a single parent. I cannot imagine what I would do if I

were in your case (don't have enough energy now...LOL). I only hope

that you have some loving friends and family that will help you with

her while your in the hospital and having treatment. Did you have an

FNA to determine the nodule was cancerous? Just curious you didn't

mention it in your post.

Hi,

That is what I have been told as well that the whole thyroid will come

out. I am out here in L.A. and I have been highly referred to Dr.

Giuliano. I will know more about when this will be scheduled

after my appointment next Monday. Please keep me posted on you!

Thanks and I send you lot's of light...

Dear ,

Welcome to the group! You've found a wonderful, supportive, CHATTY :)

group of people here! I haven't had my surgery yet but I am scheduled for

Sept. 5, 2002.

If your PCP isn't supportive, perhaps you can direct her to the ABS

(American Bariatric Society's) Website for health risks associated and linked

to obesity in women. I don't think she/he can argue with the statistics.

Good luck to you and God bless, God speed on you WLS journey.

Hi ,

As you probably know by now, YMMV when it comes to how bad surgery will be.

In my case, I had my surgery on a Friday morning. When I got out of

surgery late in the morning, I felt nauseous so the nurses turned me over

one of those pans but I fell asleep. When I woke up, They had moved me to

my room and I was fine but needed to go to the bathroom so they shoved a

bed pan under me but I just couldn't go in bed. When they came back, they

took out the bed pan and asked me if I would like to try getting up to go

to the bathroom. They were going to help me, but I had already flown out

of bed and was closing the bathroom door so they left me alone. For my

first meal, they gave me all liquids. After that, they gave me normal

food. I was not in pain probably because I had no feeling in my neck. I

didn't regain feeling until almost a year later. They released me about 48

hours after surgery after they took the drain out. Oh yeah, when you wake

up, there may be a drain threaded through your neck that ends in a plastic

bulb that they empty occasionally. In my case, I hardly noticed it because

my gown had a pocket right in the center of my chest and they dropped the

drain in there. When the surgeon took the drain out,it didn't hurt at all

but I could feel him pulling on it. Once again, I guess it didn't hurt

because I had no feeling in my neck. I was driving a few days later (the

doctor didn't restrict my driving at all) and was back at work a week

later. Actually, I could have gone back to work 3 days later but I hadn't

told people at work and wanted to get my stitches out first. Matter of

fact, the day after I went back to work, I had CPR training including

rescue breathing on a dummy.

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you Betty,

I appreciate you sharing your story. Yes I am scared of this whole

thing however I do feel like everything will be alright. When you said

that you didn't have feeling in your neck for a year...what happened?

Did you have to have the RAI that everyone is talking about? How soon

did you have to go on the thyroid medicine?

I know...questions....questions...questions! Thank you for the support!

Hi ,

Questions are good. When I first joined this list over 2 years ago, I had

just been diagnosed and didn't know what to ask. Fortunately, the time

between diagnosis and surgery was so long that I got a change to get

acclimated to the fact that I had cancer, it wasn't the end of the world,

the surgery was survivable and so was the RAI.

I had the thyroiodectomy with a modified radical neck dissection (MRND). I

guess with all that cutting and pulling, the nerves decided to go on

vacation for a while. But, that was good. I'm sure that you're familiar

with the way of scars - as they heal they have a tendency to make

themselves known by itching and just making you pay attention to them. In

my case, with no feeling, I could pretty much forget about it. I wore

turtlenecks (never could do that before) and never noticed because I had no

feeling in the front of my neck. I didn't itch so I didn't scratch and

pick at the area as it was healing, etc, etc. Since feeling came back, it

sometimes itches.

Yes, I had RAI. When I was first diagnosed and the doctor told me about

it, I was very apprehensive about doing that. However, after hearing

everyone's stories, I got more used to the idea. I had my RAI about 8

weeks after the surgery. I didn't take any thyroid hormone between the

surgery and the RAI but started on levoxyl and cytomel about 48 hours after

RAI.

One thing that helps is to read about everyone's experiences. Especially

the details of everything. For example, with the surgery, I think the

drain would have freaked me out if I didn't know if was going to be there.

The scar idea bothered me a little but now a lot. Some one on here

mentioned having the doctor draw the scar on her before the surgery so that

she could get used to the idea of its location and sort of what it would

look like.

Hope some of this is helpful.

I also agree. There will always be a reason not to start.....super bowl party, someone's b-day, a work function. Things will come up in Jan and in Feb..and in March...LOL.

RE: New to the Group

I'm with you Carol - I just started again on Phase 1, after a disasterous foray onto the Atkins Diet. I figure there are 2 weeks at least before Christmas to behave myself (my eating), and I probably will get the weight I gained on 3 days on Atkins, off. Then if I can get through Christmas without gaining, I will be really happy and I may be at goal by then - I only have those last dastardly 3 lbs to lose.

Darlene

By the Way, I saw our company's dietitian the other day and she said the South Beach Diet is much more healthy than Atkins, and for some reason women do much better on SBD than Atkins.

My opinion is that you can still gain quite a bit between now and the new year that you will have to lose. I think you should start now. I think everyone looks for reasons to put it off. If you were to start now, you would be done with phase one well before Xmas and can have a week to add back in things and see how your body reacts. You may not even want any of the goodies on xmas. Your tastes will most likely change by then. I know there are temptations but what's more important, your health or the goodies. Just a thought. :) Carol

Reminder: The South Beach Diet is not low-carb. Nor is it low-fat. The South Beach Diet teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats-the good ones-and enables you to live quite happily without the bad carbs and bad fats.
