Widow claims falsehood over HIV+ hubby

13 Nov 2007, 0411 hrs IST , TNN

GURGAON: Months after Divya (name changed) lost her husband, the

police on Monday woke up to the unexpected complaint from her father

who alleged that his daughter became HIV+ thanks to her husband. In

his complaint, Divya's father, a retired Armyman, mentioned that he

had proof that his son-in-law had died of related complications.

Divya married Anand (name changed) on April 17, 2006. Her father told

the police that Anand had not been keeping well even then. Whenever

he tried to find out why, the boy's father, a head constable with

Delhi Police, avoided answering. Anand died on April 21, 2007. Police

investigating the case said that Divya's father claimed that he had a

copy of the medical report which mentioned that Anand was HIV+. " His

family members hid the fact. Had we been aware we would not have gone

ahead with the marriage, " the inconsolable father said.

He added that Anand's family members had told them that he was

working with a well-known mobile phone service provider and hence

they did not find any reason to reject the marriage proposal. The

father also added that when he confronted the boy's father, the head

constable assured him that his family would take care of his widowed

daughter-in-law. But to his horror, a few months down the line,

Anand's family disowned her completely.

It was at this point that the distraught father took his daughter for

a medical check-up as she had not been keeping well. The tests

confirmed his worst fears as his daughter was also found to be HIV+.

The police have registered a case of breach of trust and cheating

against the boy's father at Sadar police station. DCP (south)

Satheesh Balan said: " We have lodged the FIR based on the complaint.

The girl's father claims that he has medical proof of his daughter

being HIV+. But it's a complicated case as we need to find out

whether the condition was transmitted to the girl by her husband. We

are taking all possible medical opinion before taking any further

steps. "
