Sound familiar to anyone? , Any time you usually have these interventions, they state you will feel worse than better for awhile, the " while " is usually three weeks for me so I understand why did I do this, it hurts more than the pain I had. I would call you Doctor and let them what is going on. Bennie
Guest guest
I don't know if this is a common risk of gastric bypass surgery or not. Do you know? Pain is just a terrible thing to contend with on a daily basis and it sounds like you have a doctor willing to help with the pain. Do you know what/if nerves were permanently damaged and how? Could something be pressing on the nerves? Knowledge is power. Maybe you are due some compensation for this. I don't know but I think it's worth looking into. My daughter in law had to have her " band " removed, it was causing terrible swelling of the esophagus closing off the route of food to pass through. Jennette > wrote: Hi Everyone, It all started after I had gastric bypass surgery. During the surgery, the doctor damaged the nerves in my upper back on the left side around the bra area. As soon as I woke up, I knew there was something wrong! I have had every test done from GI testing to MRI, bone scans and even another surgery for my surgeon to see if anything was wrong. I have been on all kinds of pain meds and nothing takes the pain away, it is always there 24/7, it's like a gnawing that is horrible! I am on Fentanyl Patches 100mcg and Percocet 3 times a day. We have tried different combinations of the patches and pills. I have tried Morphine and I am just looking for other alternatives. Because of the gastric bypass, I can't take extended release medications because they go right through.
Guest guest
Hi Jeanette, Thanks for your reply. As for other gastric bypass patients, I have never heard of anyone else with this problem. I moderate a gastric bypass group and we have 6000+ members and have never heard anyone else say a thing about it and my surgeon had never had another patient with it. So, I am alone in that respect. My pain doc says they must have clipped the nerve so, there is nothing pressing on it. It is all alone and just hurting! LOL I tried to get a lawyer to take my case and they all said pain is too hard to prove. I didn't understand that considering before the surgery, I was fine. I worked full time, I was a nurse and after the surgery, I am unable to work or do anything without pain! Go figure. And here in the state of California, you only have a year to file a lawsuit, so that has long past. So, I am always on the look out for a new procedure or anything that could potentially help. I am willing to try anything! Thanks, > Jennette wrote: > I don't know if this is a common risk of gastric bypass surgery or not. Do you know? Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for your reply! As for the Neurontin, yes, I am on 1500mg of it a day. I don't think it has helped my back but it has helped my leg. I had a numb sensation going down my thigh and if I miss a dose, I can sure feel it starting up again! I have also tried Lyrica and Cymbalta but no help from those either! I guess it is just a trial and error thing. I am hoping to hear from others what they have tried and maybe I will have some ideas to talk to my doctor about. Thanks, > E. It is not a pain medication, but rather an anti-seizure medication (anti-epileptic drug, or AED).

I trust surgical Doctors as far as I can throw them, when they make an error but don't fess up to it. I had an MRI done to my Thoracic spine(this took five years to get it) there were several herniations there that explained a lot. - Yonkers,NY
Guest guest
Hi , I know what you mean about trusting doctors. I worked as a medical assistant for 10 years before having to go on disability. Some doctors are just there for a paycheck! Like my dad used to ask me, " What do they call the doctor who finished last in his class? " Uh, " Doctor " " And what do you call the one who finished first in his class? " " Doctor! " There you have it! I had the surgeon who did my gastric bypass surgery do the exploratory surgery to see if he could see anything wrong but after I thought about it, I should have had someone else do it. If there was something wrong, he could have just said nope everything is fine! I had him do it in the hope that if there was a problem he could fix it but I wish I had someone else do it. Thanks, Â

I want to keep this above board and just don't care if it is surgeon error, lets correct this stuff. In that Mayo article I posted, it talks about ulcers happening especially as you lose more. Please read it, I found it by searching " Gastric Bypass Surgery Complications " . I always put problems, side effects, complications on a subject I search as sometimes if you search a subject, it only gives the good stuff. Good Luck Bennie
