Guest guest
Hi a, Welcome to the group!! You will find us to be a family of very caring, loving people, who are very supportive. Also, as an aside, I noticed that your handle is " ilovestats77 " . Do you mean stats as in statistics? Because I love statistics too!! I am pursuing my BS right now in Psych and Math, and statistics is one of my absolute FAVORITE subjects. If you love stats, too, then that's one thing we definitely have in common!! Perhaps, once we get to know each other a little bit better, and if you feel comfortable, we can chat off-list about statistics, if that's what you love. Peace & love, e.h. Because I love statistics too!! , I could always do excellent in most subjects except Algebra and Geometry. My Instructors could not understand that I could get an answer but not the steps. I am a big picture person. In fact, I completed two Masters, a technology school with Physics which I understood, but no Algebra. I petitioned the Dean that I had experience that met the criteria of the class. When I took my Graduate level Statistics, I did well and it hit me, if I could apply computations to everyday occurrences or case studies that were real to me, I got it. Later on in my teaching degree this is one of the higher thinking/teaching techniques. Children should be taught from what they know, then build upon it. No more if your airplane flew 200 hundred miles etc. I had no airplane ? did I ? I even sat through a Math Anxiety class taught by a very obese man, telling me, that I should set goals to overcome my weaknesses. I just kept thinking, boy, do you need to lose two hundred pounds and then teach a class on setting goals. I could relate to the students with learning disabilities and anxieties, as they also had ways they had to find that were their own to work out subjects and their learning styles. It is the worst mistake we make as Teachers, Parents, Educators, is not leaning our own learning styles or finding out our student's and help them to be taught that way. Most kids today are visual learners due to TV and Video games, but we still have to listen to the huge portion by lecture, which is the most ineffective teaching style. Maybe a research paper for you ? Anyway, sorry to butt in on this conversation, but welcome a, if I have not welcomed you. If I can ever help you, let me know. There are many members here that will share their experiences. Bennie
