Well my first night home alone. I thought I can do this. I woke up this AM and took a shower (alone), and try to eat and get ready before the van came to get me for my appointment and was in a lot of pain from doing this. I took Percocet and that take a while for it to kick in. I had to dry myself and worse part was trying to put the darn bandage on with no help at all. > I called my case manager this AM and crying in tear that I can't do this alone I need to go back to the Rehab. She will be stopping by this afternoon and see how my apartment is and how to rearrange things so I can get by. I can guarantee you that she will get on the phone and arrange for me to get into some kind of facility. , I am so sorry you went through this and hope you will get back in the rehab so they can assist you as when I was in the step down unit, I had to stay there a week, and they arrange someone to come out once a week and made sure I could get by and was a physical therapist. If you go back to rehab, hopefully they will make sure you have a retractable reacher that you can get to reach things and the other things that will assist you. When you come home or before, maybe they have a list of caregiver organizations in your area that come to your home and will help you out, cleaning, clothing, etc. These are through our churches and other organizationshttp: //www.medicare.gov/caregivers/ is a website for medicare recipients caregivers.com has some ideas. I have been alone before and just had my husband line up my diet cokes and then when he got home then hours later, Bob cooked for us. Otherwise microwave for me. I think you could use Meal for Wheels and calling 211 can give you resources in your area. Let us know how you are. Bennie
Guest guest
Hi Christa, I can understand how frustrating all this is, to a small extent. My own limitations are small. You are able, with help, to get through this. Just list the difficulties and give some thought how to overcome them. If you need someone to give you tips, maybe there's a group in the area dealing with Independent Living. Devices to make it easier to navigate, to reach things, bars to hold on to so you don't lose your balance while in the bathroom, etc. You have every right to request these things if they aren't there now. Other people who use a wheelchair all the time might be able to help you better, maybe there's a yahoo group on that topic. Take a deep breath and take it one moment at a time. Guest guest
I am so sorry to hear that you are struggling and in such pain. Wow your apartment does not sound real handicap designed! I thought handicapped apartments were all suppose to have wide doorway and room for wheelchair access to the bathrooms. That is terrible that you can't get your wheelchair in the bathroom. I know re-wrapping the bandage is the hardest part. I had surgery on my hand and had to re-wrap the ace bandage for several days. I could not get it tough enough to really stay on. My husband leaves early for work so he was no help. I finally gave up on the bandage after 2 days. Maybe your caseworker will be able to set you up with some in home care until you can get around more independently. I know what a struggle it is to even do your daily living activities like showering, and cooking. Keep the faith that each day gets a little easier! Let us know how you are making out. Even if you just need to vent, it is nice to hear from you. Venting is helpful! Lots of gentle hugs, Tami > Christa wrote: > and worse part was trying to put the darn bandage on with no help at > all.
