Guest guest
Beth, No tricks here for easing blood draws. The kids fortunately, (not really) have central lines which are like having a permanent IV that leads into the subclavian. All blood is drawn through this which is why they get labs all the time. My kids have fairly unstable electrolytes and bone marrow activity so most of the time it is necessary as well. But the kids don't mind - they see it as a time to get attention from the CVL nurse and lots more stickers. Would you be able to put emla on while he is asleep and then wake him and go to the lab or would he wake from the process? I know with Sam emla might be on him and it might not have hurt but he was just terrified the minute he saw the lab door. It was not a pain issues as much as a fear issue. I think in cases like Clayton - labs should only be done when absolutely necessary medically or the information needed is essential. It's a really different situation than ours.
