Guest guest
Congratulations on the weight loss Gena. Let's pray you don't have any problem with hair loss. My Mom had her surgery in January and had some hair loss after about 4 months. Be sure to take in lots of protein. Good luck on your continued weight loss. in Sacramento, CA RM2003VR158 @ aol.com Dr. in Burlingame pre-op, Sept. 16 380-322-130? " The easiest thing to be in the world is you. Guest guest
Are you taking dry Vit E and plenty of protein supps? Losing my hair is my worst fear, because all my life everyone has always admired my hair. I know it sounds vain, but I'm sure you all will understand that if you don't feel so good about the way you look, if there's one feature that receives compliments, you certainly don't want to change it or to harm it!!! Anyway, I am just over three months out (I had open RNY on 4/18/02), and I have been taking Biotin, a vitamin supplement daily. (In addition to my Calcium, Iron and Multivitamin) I was told by my surgeon that this would not necessarily prevent the hair loss, but it would encourage new hair to grow in faster if you did have hair loss. I also eat a teaspoon of Pan Low Sodium, Low Sugar Peanut Butter every other day as a snack. This was also suggested by my surgeon as a hair loss preventative. So far, so good, I haven't noticed any extra hair falling out, but then again I do " shed " every summer. I haven't experienced any dumping symptoms from eating this brand of peanut butter. Also, I don't think it has slowed my weight loss, because I have lost 97 pounds so far. So, check with your surgeons, PCP's, nutritionists, or whoever you trust about these type things, and see if they agree with what my surgeon told me. Best of luck to everyone!! Guest guest
Those of you worried about hair loss - it may help to know that the reason the hair falls out is because it's starting to grow again. Hair is dead, and the damage is done, but the hair doesn't usually fall out until it starts growing again. (This is true for nutritional deficiencies, may not apply to cancer, etc.) Usually, by the time the hair is falling out, the damage is already done. Take precautions BEFORE your surgeries (biotin, hi quality fats, etc.) and during the important first few weeks. Guest guest
The nutritionist we use told me that the most common cause of hair loss is iron deficiency. That seems to correlate for me. I can tell when my ferritin starts to drop by the amount of hair I'm losing. Guest guest
Linn: Is it even loss or in the top or front. Mine is consistent with androgen alopecia. My mom has it too. However, mine did not start until I started T3 and testosterone. When I asked my endo she said estrogen too. My mom's hair loss started 15 years earlier than mine so I thought I had escaped it. -- Re: Hair loss The nutritionist we use told me that the most common cause of hair loss is iron deficiency. Guest guest
While trying to lose weight in the early 90's I began to lose hair....I found that protein deficiency was causing it. Guest guest
Mine is basically all over, but at the temples also. Guest guest
Mine is mostly at the temples and in the front hairline area of my forehead. The hairline has gone back an inch or two with just short sparse hairs left The temples went about 3 inches back, with little hair and scalp showing, even shiny! Yuck! -- Re: Hair loss Mine is basically all over, but at the temples also. Guest guest
, Thanks for that info. I think I'm okay for protein. There are so many things that can affect hair loss, it gets a little crazy trying to figure it all out. Thyroid and adrenal problems can do it, so can deficiencies in biotin, carnitine, iron, and several others. Mine definitely is thyroid related, but also seems to come and go when I start to get anemic. I never seem to be able to manage a good balance. (Sorta like everything else in my life!!) :-) Linn > > While trying to lose weight in the early 90's I began to lose hair....I > found that protein deficiency was causing it. > > Just my experience. > > > -------Original Message------- > > From: mwm1glm >
Guest guest
I seem to have a lot of new growth to counterbalance it which helps. I told the doctor on Monday it's a good thing I do or I'd be bald by now. Last summer when I was really out of whack I went to get my hair trimmed and the girl that cut my hair kept making comments about how much hair there was after she shampooed my hair. I told her that yeah I was aware of that, that I had thyroid problems but she just kept harping on about it. I haven't had my hair cut since, it really bothered me. Now I just trim it myself. I have a friend who has breast cancer and she's undergoing chemo and her hair mostly all fell out last week. Fortunately she had a good friend who is a hair stylist and had dealt with several people undergoing treatment who offered to come over and cut it for her so she wouldn't have to go to somebody who would make stupid comments about it.
