Guest guest
I'm getting minimally invasive surgery to repair a herniated disk in my lower back by a neurosurgeon. This is my first surgery. So how is the recovery? Is it a scary surgery?

This is my first surgery. So how is the recovery? Is it a scary surgery? My father had several back surgeries. The one he had to repair a herniated disk in his lower back went very well. There was some pain after but that was controlled with pain medication, Oxycontin I think. He only took it a week or so. I can't remember how much time he had to spend taking it easy on his back (no bending, no lifting, no prolonged sitting, etc.) but with someone there to help out, he had no problem at all. I would not call it a scary surgery at all. It is a relatively safe procedure and is fairly common. I think you'll be just fine.

Also, I mentioned that my Sister had instructions from a Dental Surgeon once to take a certain amount of vitamin C,avoid sugars, and eat high protein low fat meals. I had the same surgery and had extensive swelling, she did not. If you smoke, quit before your surgery it impedes healing plus some medications but they should give you an instruction sheet. You should not remember anything as they will give you medications and if you find yourself getting really anxious, talk to your Doctor and he can give you something for that. Being informed keeps you from being scared. Here is a video on disc repair, it may not be the one you are having but it gives you and idea and is informative. http://www.orlive.com/methodisthealth/videos/herniated-disc-repair1 You might check your Doctor's website and see what he has posted on surgery instructions and procedures. I am sure you will do well, just get the information of what to expect and hope you get pain relief. Bennie
