CHIP and Adult Basic

CHIP (Child Health Insurance Program) has nothing to do with COBRA. It

provides health insurance for anyone under 19 who doesn't qualify for

Medicaid. Anyone under 150% of the federal poverty level gets it free.

Adult basic isn't as good as CHIP, but it's better than nothing.

Steve/Bennie, or anyone?

Do you know anything about medical coverage for adults without insurance? My

sister has been unemployed for 3 years now.

She has now exhausted her lifetime savings and retirement investments and is

living day to day on any hourly job she can do. She needs surgery on her

kidneys. But no doctor will touch her because she doesn't have insurance.

It is so bad that she has tubes out her back for drainage that a doctor put in

to keep her going until she could have surgery. Her kidneys are blocked by

stones which must be enormous by now. I don't know what to do to help her but

surely there is some kind of provision for her.

She went to apply for disability but was told no because with surgery she could

be helped. In the meantime she is on heavy duty antibiotics to combat an

infection that began. I think that she may end up dead because she can get no

help. Any ideas?

I guess when she passes out and is taken by ambulance, a hospital will have to

admit her. Not that it makes any difference but she is in the Indianapolis

area. Does available medical care for the uninsured depend on where you live in

the United States?

Nothing for adults without kids unless they are deemed disabled by social

security, thus one of the reasons people in poverty have more kids.

Kidney problems qualify you for Medicare automatically. I think they might

even waive the waiting period.

Is she on dialysis? (I think that's what social security requires to get

Medicare)

Is she working? Try Medicaid, even if they said no before.

My state has looser income requirements for certain severe illnesses (Kidney

issues, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, etc.

What state does she live in (sorry to ask again, if already mentioned)
