And don't know what I will do once I can't see or use the computer. Hi , I work with people with disabilities, including those who are losing or have lost their vision. Now, while you still have eyesight, is the time to start learning how to live without it. You won't have to stop using the computer, just because your sight goes. You will just need to get a computer with the appropriate programs and you'll be good to go. You'll be able to send and receive email, work spreadsheets, all sorts of things. Playing cards on line or manipulating photos won't work out very well of course. But that will be about the extent of your computer limitations. You have an Australia yahoo email address, so I am assuming you are some where in that big and wonderful land. Australia has excellent people and resources to help you with the transition. Please, please, use the wonderful services available to you. You'll soon have the skills and the support you need to function very well. The Royal Society for the Blind is a very good place to start. They will be able to put you on the right path and be on it with you as your sight goes. I don't know where in Australia you live, so here's the link to the website for the whole country. They'll be able to put you together with their local people. http://www.rsb.org.au/ Australia also has an organization called Vision Australia. They can be an excellent resource for you as well. http://www.visionaustralia.org.au/ Losing one's eyesight is scary. But, once you have the right tools in place, you'll be able to cook, clean, get around fine outdoors, use the computer, and do almost everything sighted people do. You won't be able to drive a car, but you can take a bus, shuttle, or taxi, so you won't feel like you're 'shut in.' You won't be able to see the screen, but you will be able to follow all well made television programs. Please learn all about audio books too. Your local library folks will be happy to teach you. Most libraries have home services too, so they will be able to help you have home entertainment for free. RSB will be able to steer you in the right direction too. Please get on this right away. The more you learn now, the less stressful the transition will be. Once you've learned how all these basic things work and have made the appropriate connections to keep your life interesting, you'll be well prepared for whatever the future brings.
