Hi Bennie Oxycodone (Percocet helped after my surgery, but Oxycontin (long acting Percocet minus the Tylenol) did nothing for me. Now my psychiatrist manages my pain medications, and will only give me Lortab and Klonopin for breakthrough pain. The Klonopin also helps with my anxiety disorder. We can respond differently to variants of medications. I have never tried Dilaudid, but my doctor refuses to prescribe it or Percocet. Although he did offer Fentanyl aka Duragesic patches if that makes sense. That is something, for me not necessarily for others, to save for later, if I had some kind of painful Cancer or other disease. Let me clarify that I do NOT object to those who use it now for pain relief. I realize you personally know the differences in these medications, but I through out the details for the sake of those who don't. My psychiatrist manages me pain medication, because I also live with Bipolar Disorder, so he is the logical person to handle all my medications. Lyrica helps, with my post knee replacement surgery, because there was nerve damage in both knees. I have to live with the mental fog, and a bit of weight gain, because I have not found an effective alternative. Fortunately, those have been the only adverse reactions. Sorry about the meandering. Just to clarify yet again, I know you are not the one who has had knee replacement surgery. Kaylene

Kaylene, I know your weren't : ) Isn't it ironic how some Doctors will not prescribe Dilaudid versus Oxycodone when it is listed in the same class of pain medications. Also the Fentanyl is listed as a same class of pain medication and some Doctors will not prescribe it because they state it is stronger. I pasted the pain medication ladder below which Doctors usually go by, it was developed by the World Health Orginizations. I also get so frustrated as the classification that people with Cancer experience more pain and the pain medications are classified for cancer patients not non cancer patients. (ex Actiq)Actiq was first classified for cancer patients and some insurance would not pay if you were non cancer patients. http://www.eorthopod.com/content/medication-approach-chronic-pain Now, I am not insulting patients with Cancer but I am sure some neurothophy and arthritic patients would state their pain is just as great and I agree. I have seen patients with migranes, arthritis, MS pain, neuropathic, spinal, fibromylagia, and other pain would care to differ their pain is just as quantifiable. I do not think someone should be denied pain medications because they cannot prove their pain is as bad as others. Pain is subjective and I used to have the highest pain threshold, I was embarrassed to admit I had pain and when I got Fibromyagia I couldn't stand for anyone to touch me and I would cry in pain. Everyone deserves to have their pain controlled and shouldn't have to " prove " their pain. I am glad you have someone monitoring you pain but I don't we should ever worry about the pain medication selected being in a higher classification if it allows you to have your pain controlled and you have a functional life. I allowed this stigma to control me for years and finally let someone treat my pain appropriately. I am just talking about my situation and others may not experience this and that is the reason we need to advocate for ourselves and research all we can. I think it ia a good thing that your Psychiatrist manages your medication because he seems to keep up with the side effects and assist you.I understand you " saving for later " but don't thing you should do that if you have uncontolled pain. You weren't rambling or meandering, I followed your train of thought and my husband teases me about me doing that all the time. I think I put hydrocodone for Dilaudid when it is hydromorphone and a Class 3 medication. I agreed Lyrica was effective but I had the visual disturbances it causess and I found the longer I was on it, the worse it became. I don't know if others are being helped with Savella and Neurotin didn't seem to help as much so I am glad you can tolerate the side effects of Lyrica. So I will stop rambling also and I copied this fchard from the internet on classifications of medications . I agree with you. Bennie
