Yeah but you're not cooking ON the nonstick surface. if you cook or

heat your food in safe cookware, you're fine.

Actually, if the non-stick surface gets really hot (I don't know the exact

temp) it gives off toxic fumes. I'm sure

you can find the exact temp & details online.

I'd recommend what we use for everything except extra large cooking. G E Model #

169055 Convection Oven from Walmart or other local source. Google it for

details. Alvin

Bekki~

After some research here's what I considered:

1. Tefal Avante Elite Convection Oven: 150-450degrees, 0.5 cubic feet capacity,

bake/broil/toast, 1600 watts, 90 minute timer with auto shut off, removable

crumb tray,

self cleaning interior, enamel baking and broiling trays. Only around $100.

2. Cuisinart TOB-175 Convection Oven: 150-500degrees (I think you mentioned you

would like this), 0.5 cubic feet capacity = big enough for a 4 lb. bird

apparently,

bake/broil/toast, 1600 watts, removable crumb tray (in back), 3 year warranty

(others only

have a 1 year warranty). About $150.

3. Krups FBC2 Convection Oven: 150-450degrees, 0.5 cubic feet capacity,

bake/broil/toast, 1600 watts, auto shut off, removable crumb tray, About $160.

3. Krups FBC4-13 Convection Oven: 150-450degrees, 0.56 cubic feet capacity,

bake/broil/toast/defrost, 1600 watts, auto shut off, removable crumb tray, 2

racks, heats

top and bottom - most even cooking. About $200.

Thanks to and Cyndi here is where I got a lot of my info:

http://www.consumersearch.com/www/kitchen/toaster-ovens/review.html

I think I will get the Tefal Avante Elite since it will does everything I need

and is the least

expensive. I think if I had more money and really wanted to replace my oven (not

just my

microwave and toaster) I would get the Krups FBC4-13 since it is alittle bigger

and seems

to have the most heating elements/cook the most evenly. But for now, since this

is my

first toaster oven and I am on a budget I will go with the Tefal - it's safe, it

has good

ratings, it cooks evening and apparently the quality is great - no cheap parts

and no hard

to reach spots for cleaning. I will let you all know how I like it!

I just got a GE convection toaster oven from Walmart that has a light gray

matte metal interior - AFAIK, and please correct me if I'm wrong, non-stick

is always that charcoal shiny surface?

The dial says 150 degrees, but is structured so that there is space

before that, just not numbered. The unit's fan clicks on around what

I'd guess was 120 (assuming off is 0 and the increments from 150-200,

etc are consistent with the leading space)... but I haven't tested it

yet. The elements power on just a bit before that. I plan to pick up

a little thermometer as soon as I find one since I want it to double

as a dehydrator - it has a warming function that is just the fan, with

the occasional heaters to maintain temp. I think they're quartz

heating elements, I've never seen a toaster oven that didn't have the

typical coils, but these definitely aren't - they're sorta clear?

I just checked my toaster oven (which I love), and the bottom looks

like stainless steel, then there are the racks that the food (or your

pan) sets on, and the sides look to be a black surface, but I'm pretty

sure it's not a non-stick (I doubt they'd put that on the sides

anyway). Mine is a Krups that does all sorts of cool stuff so I never

use my microwave anymore. I wrote about it here:

, the one you link to in your post has a non-stick interior. I just

checked. I thought I had read that when I first saw the link on your site.

Don't know if that's the one you actually use. :)

I think I've seen some in Bed, Bath & Beyond without the non-stick interior.

I didn't make a note of any, though. Haven't convinced DH we should get rid

of the microwave yet.

Thermometer acquired! :) It does 100F as the lowest temp with fan.

Although, I just realized, unlike the first model I picked up (whose fan and

timer bell went within 4 uses), this one doesn't feature an always on!

AUGH! 60 minute timer dial only. I'm a bit bummed as I think that blows

the feasibility of using it as a dehydrator... *sigh*

Just curious, did you ever buy  and/or use a dehydrator? How do you feel about

the uses of dried foods. Are they more economical, just a preference or better

than canned or frozen? Or just not doing the canning? Just curious.

Lana,

What model number is the new one? Is it the same model as the first one?

No, the first was a euro pro - it had a rotisserie as well.

This one is a GE 169127 Convection toaster oven. UPC 681131691277

I used to have an American Harvest dehydrator... but quickly

discovered the drawbacks to the use of a porous material (plastic) - I

just couldn't get it clean after an experiment with some fatty meat so

I gave it to a friend who didn't care about that.

I think dried foods taste divine, but they're very easy to overeat.

They're far better than canned foods as they're not heated very high

at all, so they retain more nutrients. As for frozen foods, they're

not that bad IMHO they just don't have the flavor dried ones do -

that, and dried foods make great out-on-the-go snacks. I need more

on-the-go snacks...
