Guest guest
Does anyone know anything about cystic acne and the correlation between hormones? Can diet have an effect on balancing hormones? I have a history of acne, but took accutane about 4 1/2 to 5 years ago. The acne went away for a while, but has come back again. I am now 25 with adult acne. It resurfaced about a year ago and has progressively gotten worse. I am waiting to have a few tests done on my hormones to see if they are imbalanced or if my thyroid may be a problem. I am not comfortable with accutane for a second round. It is very dangerous. Please share if you know how changing my diet may help or if possibly adding vitamin A would help. Same question for thyroid problems. Does anyone know anything about how diet may affect the thyroid? Thanks.
Guest guest
Isn't accutane the Vitamin A analogue they use to treat acne? Vitamin A may help. As may balancing hormones, but what did it for me way back when was sunlight (and likely the Vitamin D it creates). It took me years after I got rid of the acne to realize I had a hormone problem and fix it. As for diet and thyroid health, the biggest for me has been avoiding fluoride (tap water, toothpaste) and bromate (most commercial breads, including flour - not allowed in organic foods and not in homeground flour). Getting adequate iodide and tyrosine will help especially if you're hypo, as thyroid hormone is made of those. Be careful with high dose iodine if you have Hashi's. Selenium and Manganese should help if you're hypo or hyper. Avoiding goitrogens may help too, but I'd start with the aforementioned personally as you could avoid goitrogens all you'd like and still have trouble if you're eating bromate or not getting enough manganese, etc. -Lana " There is nothing more useful than sun and salt. Drastically reducing refined grains and sugars should help your skin. I had moderate cystic acne as a teenager and into my 20s, which finally went away as my diet improved. You want the vast majority of your diet to consist of organic, pasture-raised meats, eggs, and dairy and organic vegetables (but not too many fruits due to the sugar). This diet is high in healthy fats, moderately high in protein, and very low in carbohydrates. If you're not currently eating this way, it can be a difficult change but if you try it for even a few weeks you should see benefits. As Lana mentioned, iodine is key to thyroid health. You can find a lot of info online. Here is a basic primer: http://jcrows.com/JoFahey_IodineRemediesSecretsFromTheSea.pdf Tom
Guest guest
I would very seriously suspect Candida/yeast/fungus overgrowth in your system as a major cause of the acne. What is your diet like? Do you have a history of taking antibiotics or birth control pills? If this is the case I would avoid sugar/grains and most carbs and get on a good probiotic (like BioKult) and eat lots of fermented foods, especially sauerkraut. You may also need a liver/gallbladder cleanse. Hope this helps, > > Does anyone know anything about cystic acne and the correlation between hormones? Can > diet have an effect on balancing hormones? Guest guest
Hello Everyone~ I have just restarted this group after being off about a year. I too was on Accutane in my mid/late 20's - I truly had a " pizza face. " I first stopped taking birth control pills which made a difference and then I stopped the Accutane. (I had to sign a release form to be on Accutane w/o taking birth control pills.) I would still break out occasionally, but severely (cysts) until I stopped eating dairy. Also, I changed my cleansing regime. I wash my face with natural soap and gently with a loofah mit and when I get out of the shower I cleanse my face with rubbing alcohol. Any soap residue is removed b/c if I get even the slightest pore clogged, I easily break out, though they are superficial, not cystic. Then again I am Italian with a tendency to have very oily facial skin. This may not work for those with fair or dry skin. In hindsight, I believe being on birth control pills led to my needing Prozac and Accutane. Now, I take none of these. In my experience, skin cleansing has absolutely nothing to do with acne. Dirt and oil buildup on the surface of the skin does not clog pores; pores clog from deep within when your diet is not right (even with blackheads and more superficial acne). In fact, the few times I've been on long camping trips my skin improved noticeably, despite my face being dirtier, oilier, and sweatier than normal, and using no soap for days on end. It's all about diet! The skin reflects your whole-body health. It's great to hear that stopping dairy eliminated your cystic acne. Have you ever tried raw milk? Would you say that drinking raw milk is better than no milk at all? I know that raw is better than conventional. Here in South Carolina raw milk is difficult to come by, but I know that I can order it frozen online. Carla, Where in SC are you? One of the raw milk farmers runs a route through the state to drop off raw milk since it's legal there. He might stop near you, and his prices are really good. http://www.scmilkywayfarm.com/ KerryAnn http://www.cookingtf.com/ - American and Australian TF Menu Mailers http://www.tfrecipes.com/forum/ - Traditional Foods forum

Guest guest
--- In , " Carla " <carlagolden@...> Carla, Where in South Carolina are you located. I may be able to help you find raw milk. Raw milk is legal in South Carolina and sold at many of the retail and health food stores in my town of Aiken. Kim RD, PhD-c aikennutrition@...
