I was in a terrible accident at a job site. My neck, thoracic, and lumbar spine were fractured in 13 places. Not to mention the herniations that were found after I had a full body MRI. 5 in my neck with myelopathy. And four in my thoracic spine, and two in my lumbar spine. > > It took many years later to get osteopaths or bone spurs as they are normally known as. Nothing my doctor tried worked on the pain. Until I saw a neurologist who also is a surgeon(sic)too. He spoke with my PCP and prescribed Vicodin ES. That worked for a year then they prescribed Vicodin HP. Which is still working, but not for 6 hours now. It only works for 4 hours, hence the need for break through pain. : I have been on my medication regime for five years now and it is time to change and my Doctors starting with the break thru first and see how that works, then we start on my primary pain medication. I have a muscle relaxant to use when the spasms start and don't get out of cramping. This usually happens and i medication tolerance when the medication loses its effect. I was changed from Oxycodone to Dilaudid which and ER had given me IV and helped. The Survivor's Guide to Intractable Pain by Dr. Forest Tenent {no I do not get pay backs for recommending this } discusses this and has charts of all the drugs that are available to rotate in all categories and options for a patient. The guide also discusses other medications that assist with the main medications such as muscle relaxants, anti anxiety medication, break thru medication, anti-depressants, nerve type medications (Neurontin, Lyrica, Topomax etc), Topicals ( Lidocaine patches, compounded medications) etc. This is from my experience and the Guide has helped me. I am not a Doctor but just sharing what I have had in my pain management plan, not saying others should or should not use or ask their Doctors for. This is just my experience. I appreciate your experience , as I am going to have to do something, as I believe I have a compressed nerve from my hardware from my three level fusion and hopefully they find it in other extended testing. I also find my medications lose their effectiveness at shorter times, four hours instead of six, eight hours instead of twelve, and certainly not twenty-four hours timed dose, twelve instead of twelve. Luckily, my Doctor has no problem with prescribing it for the hours I need. Can they remove the osteophytes and help ? I hope you get relief for them. Good Luck, .
