Guest guest
I don't know if China exports feed here. If I were a betting person, I would doubt it since our grain farmers do a great job of supplying most of our needs along with some of the rest of the world. I will say that there are only a few certified organic feed producers in the US and I am lucky enough to have one that is 10 miles away. The bigger issue is this - organic grains have not gone down in price like the conventional ones have. The price point at where you can sell your chicken or eggs in this economy is almost driving the organic market to a breaking point. Even with economies of scale, most organic farmers barely make anything. Does anyone know if China exports organic chicken or other livestock feed to the US? If so, does anyone know if it gets into the meat of animals that eat it? I know it's been found in eggs, but wondering if meat is also a concern? Suze Fisher Casco Bay Maine WAPF Chapter
Guest guest
We import almost every category of food, for both human and animal consumption, from all over the world. This madness is caused by farm subsidies both here and in other countries among other causes. The problem is that you can't trust anything coming from China being what it's labeled. As everyone, including Chinese mothers, have learned the hard way over and over again. I'm not a farmer but I would think that using pasture for 30% of their calories, plus growing your own feed should be cheaper than buying feed, or at least it should give you more control over the feed pricing. Guest guest
Yes, we import wheat from China, that was one of the problems with the dog and cat food disaster a few years ago. What is the bread basket of the world (as the Midwest used to be called when I was a kid living there) doing importing wheat? Rehoboth Ranch, one of our local farmers in north TX, gets organic feed from an Amish farmer in Ohio. He claims to be the only farmer feeding his free-range pigs and chicken organic feed. He told me recently that a mill in central TX is going to start selling organic feed grown in the U.S. Personally, I would rather have non-organic feed grown in the U.S. than organic feed from China.
