I've been asking the different companies whose products I use whether

they will be buying the new GMO sugar from the GMO sugar beets (will

be half the US-made sugar and not really tested for safety). Here's

the reply I got from Nestle, whose baking chips I use because I can

get them bulk.

Dear Nestlé Consumer,

Thank you for contacting Nestlé® Chocolate and Confections.

Nestlé USA uses ingredients derived from genetically-modified crops

in some of our products. Over the last ten years, farmers have

switched to new crops developed using biotechnology. These crops have

allowed farmers to significantly reduce their use of pesticides and

to conserve topsoil, which we feel are important benefits to everyone.

The FDA has carefully evaluated these new crops and has concluded

that the foods made from them are the same as their un-modified

counterparts with respect to nutrition, composition and their ability

to be used as food ingredients. Additionally, the allergenic

potential of these foods has not been affected. We have carefully

reviewed the safety information on these crops and are in agreement

with expert scientists at the FDA and university research centers.

Nestlé USA products are manufactured under strict quality control

conditions to meet or exceed all applicable government and industry

standards. Because of Nestlé USA's own high standards and the FDA

regulations to which all of our products are subject, you can rest

assured that all of our products are safe.

We appreciate your interest and hope you will visit our website often

for the latest information on our products and promotions.

Sincerely,

Consumer Response Representative
