Vegetable Oil and Weight Gain/Thyroid Function

Stephan on his Whole Health Source blog has recently made a couple of

interesting posts about excess omega-6 linoleic acid and weight gain

as well as thyroid suppression.

http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/

He cites evidence that excess omega-6 fat in the diet is likely to

favor fat storage more so than diets low in omega-6. He also mentions

these study results regarding suppressed thyroid function:

* A corn oil diet greatly suppresses the liver's response to T4 when

compared with an equal amount of lard (5% by weight).

* A safflower oil diet suppresses the liver's response to T3 when

compared with an equal amount of beef tallow (10% by weight).

* A diet high in linoleic acid suppresses the response of brown fat

and liver to T3.

More reasons to keep dietary PUFA low.

I've been following Stephan's blog for a month or two, since you or

someone here posted a link to it. I've found his posts to be excellent

and his ideas to be on the cutting edge of non-mainstream nutrition. I

recommend that everyone here bookmark it!
