I am wondering, is it safe to combine heating pads with pain relieving

Bengay or Icy Hot on my neck or back, and then immediately apply heat to

the same area?

Hi

It is NOT safe, you will receive a nasty, wicked burn. Never, ever

combine heating pads, after putting any of the pain relieving creams

etc.

Also, do NOT take a hot bath after putting any of the analgesic

OTC creams on your skin.  My brother did this when we were

in high school and he had a nasty 1ST degree burn on his knee.

Don't put any of the hot patches on your skin, and use a heating

pad at the same time either.

Always read the labels, this sort of thing should be on them.

Thank you so much, Kaylene, you answered my question perfectly!! The answer

is exactly what I thought it was, namely that it is NOT safe to combine the

two treatments and that doing so will cause a chemical burn.

I got a bonus, too, though, in your response because you gave me additional

information of which I was not yet aware--thank you so much again!!!

No heat for any prescription ointments or products containing capsaicin  or

" heat " patches or creams.  You can certainly end up with burns or too much

prescription medication absorbed through the skin, an overdose.

ALL,

I am allowed to place heat on my ointments as it disperses them. I have had

ointments that were compounded with Motrin, flexiril etc and no problems. I now

use boltaren gel and my Doctor says to use heat. She also was the only one to

tell me to use heat when I had injections as it disperses medication and it does

not just knot and cause scarring in one area.

You should not leave heat on long periods of time and these ointments are

topical and hard to overdose as they tend to stay in localized area. I use heat

with my ben gay, I just put it on low. The official ben gay site state NO as

many people have sensitive skin. http://www.bengay.com/faqs

Just as you don't put ice directly on skin, heating pad should be used sparingly

and with recommendation of Doctor. Bennie
