Guest guest
, Here in Belgium, we do the same as you describe and it is generally accepted that clapping is not useful. It is not used anymore for years now. So, we do no clapping or 'tapottage' as it is called here in French. 's therapy starts with 5 minutes of jumping on a trampoline. After that she's lying on a big, big ball while we make the pression with one hand on each side of the thorax in different positions. We also jump with her on the ball while making pression on the thorax. During all this, she has to " blow " the air out slowly or sing loudly. We end with a few minutes of fluttering. In total the therapy is taking 30 minutes and is done twice a day. In fact, likes her therapy a lot and usually sings plenty of songs during her therapy. As of this year, we will start using the pepmask. Are you using that in Switzerland ? Liesbeth, mom to (2wCF) and Kasper (8 months woCF) RE: [CYSTIC-L] Interesting report.... Ok I am new to the list... but may I ask you whether you mean " Clapping " by chest physiotherapy ? Because in Europe, at least in France, Belgium and Switzerland,( I don't know for the other countries) they say that Clapping is totally obsolete and they haven't practised it for years. What we do is a bronchial drainage. it is much more gentle than clapping... we make a strong pression with one hand on the upper part of the thorax, while maintaining the other hand on the bottom of the abdomenn, this forces the patient to breathe with his abdomen and helps draining the mucus out of the airways. This action lasts a few seconds and is repeated for about 15 minutes. Also by making pression with your hands on the thorax, you can actually FEEL if there are any secretions below and you actually know, when you drained them out, because you don't feel anything anymore. I am talking about small child drainage, when you cannot ask them to cooperate, but when they are 3 or 4, you can do a much more interactive drainage. Now that I do drainage instead of clapping, my doc always says that Leo is very clear. What are you guys doing in Germany and Spain ? ----- <<snip << MAIN RESULTS: There were no randomised controlled trials or cross over trials eligible for inclusion in the review. REVIEWER'S CONCLUSIONS: Short-term crossover trials, which had to be excluded from this review, suggest that airway clearance regimens could have beneficial effects in patients with cystic fibrosis. However based on this review there is currently no robust scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that chest physiotherapy for the purpose of clearing airway secretions has a beneficial effect in patients with cystic fibrosis >> Barbara, Very interesting.... I guess we will have to go on faith and common sense that chest physiotherapy makes a difference since no one seems to want to study it.
