Wow, sounds like a baby genius to me!

What was your diet during pregnancy and lactation? I'm currently pregnant

and would love to know all your secrets! :)

My older daughter was the same - that was in 1972.

I was going to say that that was long before I knew anything about nutrition;

but thinking about it, I would have been eating a good diet including our own

grass fed beef, pork from our own pigs, cream from a house cow and vegetables

still containing nutrients. My farmer husband was way ahead of his time !

Good diet, or smart kid?

So... My daughter, now 9.5 months old, has been walking the last

month. Climbing almost as long, and can say well over a dozen words

at this point (she's gained 6 in the last week alone). I can't help

but to wonder... is it the diet I ate

pre-conception/pregnancy/lactating? Or is she just a smart kid?

Lana,

Congrats on your little ones amazing development.  As far as gross motor skills

go (walking and climbing) the desire to get from point A to point B is hardwired

into baby's brain, meaning it's instinctual as mammals as a survival tool to

explore our world and to get there as soon as possible.  Genetics also plays a

role in how fast this occurs as muscles are stretched and strengthened during

the beginning stages (rolling over and sitting up)  These are not skills that

are developed in the frontal lobe.  Kids who are " smarter " don't necessarily

walk and climb earlier than other kids.  I worked as a case manager for MR

clients and although we served two individuals who were severely retarded, they

both walked at developmentally appropriate ages (before 2)

HOWEVER...talking at an earlier age is a sign of reading readiness and this is a

cognitive skill that can determine intelligence.  Children who can communicate

earlier can retain knowledge at a earlier age and therefore can meet

communication and reading milestones earlier. (I'm not sure if this makes

sense)  Children can grasp concepts earlier if they have a better command of the

language.  Research is mixed on why some kids talk early, genetics and

environment play an important role (If you are talking to her constantly and are

intelligent then chances are she will be too) but Sally Fallon talks about

eating eggs to boost brain development in pregnancy and during infancy and the

consumption of animal fats and I believe diet does play a role.  I also believe

that not eating white sugar makes kids calmer and it is easier for them to

retain information is they are able to sit still and not be all " sugared up. "

i am the adoptive mommy to two little special needs boys, the youngest has

Shaken baby syndrome and I fed him a WAP diet during infancy and he's doing so

well right now considering he almost died and I like to think it helped play a

part in his healing.

Hope this helped and feel free to ask me anything else,

Joy

As a wholistic healthcare provider who has seen MANY children over the years,

there are many conventionally nourished infants whose birthmothers ate terrible

diets, formula fed their babies with poor quality formula who are on their feet

at 7 mos and those who are babbling full sentences by 6 mos.

There may be no way of knowing for certain, but a high quality diet with high

quality fats to provide substance for the developing nervous system, awareness

when it comes to vaccination decisions, strong parent-child interactions can all

influence positive development in our little ones.

Joy,

How wonderful that you have adopted two special needs boys. I can second the

importance of a healthy diet for them--it really seems to help my 3 year old son

(with Fragile X). We have also recently started him on Vitamin E in relatively

high doses, based on recent research that that helps, and his improvement,

coincidental or not, just in the last few weeks has been extraordinary. New

words, mastering new skills like the swing, slide, etc. Of course, this is

coupled with early intervention, therapy, and lots of attention and love.
