Am i missing something or is dust mite a saying meaning you tripped over nothing. My hands, arms, and left hip are already hollering bloody murder and I've not even been on the darned crutches for 24 hours yet. My balance is really bad, so crutches and I are not a safe combination. I'm hoping to be able to rent a steerable knee walker today. I'll call around to see which pharmacy has a steerable one. My back is so bad, I doubt I'd do well with one that has to be lifted a bit to turn. As for the dust mites - " Tripping over a dust mite " is a phrase quite commonly used by people who fall easily. If those damned dust mites would just stay out of our way, we wouldn't be bouncing off of walls or landing on the carpet, concrete, or gravel! I've lost count of how many times I've fallen in the last 20 years. Each time I fall, I'm grateful that I haven't broken a hip. The older I get the more grateful I am. I'm not at all happy about this lower leg break. It's right above my ankle and screamingly painful. Of course, the hospital doctor saw my medication list and said " well at least you won't need any painkillers. " He honestly don't understand that for those of us with chronic pain, the base medication we are on is to restore some normalcy to our days. It's not meant to damp down the pain of a freshly broken leg. When the doctor made that comment to me, I was too tired to start explaining such things to him. I just looked at him and said that I would be seeing my pain management doctor on Tuesday and that he would adjust my medication so that I will get some relief. I didn't start explaining about pain management contracts and the like. The way mine is written, I can get the proper type and amount of pain medication from a doctor or hospital for situations like breaking my leg - as long as I tell the pain clinic doctor on my next visit. There's nothing in my contract that says that I can just start upping the medication I get from the pain clinic. However, that's exactly what I've had to do. I always make sure I have an extra couple of weeks of medication on hand, just in case something like this were to happen. So, when I see the pain management doctor on Tuesday morning, I'll have to tell him exactly what medication I took more of, so he can decided what medication is best for a broken leg. Right now, my stomach is mad at me from taking Ibuprofen. 600 mg of Ibuprofen is a good pain duller when taken with a break through medication. The pain from this break is really bad at the moment. When I broke my back, it didn't hurt this badly. Sure hope it eases up soon. So, watch out for those evil little dust mites. One of them can jump up and send you flying when you least expect it! :-) Lyndi

Guest guest
Lyndi: I tripped over one of those pesky dust mites getting out of my husband's (very) raised Bronco and snapped the fifth metatarsal bone in my foot in 3 places last October, so I feel your pain, I really, really do!! After a week of screaming pain, a rather large screw was put in and little pieces of broken bone were removed. I'm just now to the point where I can wear my beloved platforms again (I know they are dangerous, but it's the little things that make us smile, yes?). My advice on renting the knee walker: that was my plan, too, until I saw the prices of a knee walker, yipes! My husband found a very nice regular walker on sale for ninety some odd dollars and I figured for the amount of time I was going to have to use a walker, rental prices would amount to at least that much and at some future point, either my husband or I are going to need a walker so we went ahead and make the investment. Great idea, really, I was soon scooting around with one knee on the walker seat like nobody's business (the front wheels are articulated so no lifting is necessary when turning). I ended up giving the walker to my dad so that he can have a walker upstairs as well as downstairs now. The only downside to my story is that now that my foot is completely back to normal, they want to take the screw out. What? Another surgery? Really? I'm going to try and vote no but the podiatrist/surgeon may try to over ride that decision. DO NOT want to be off this foot again and heal all over again. Best wishes to you and your ankle. Down with dust mites! Chelsea

I have access to the four wheeled walkers with brakes, seat etc, but won't be stable enough to use one for at least another month. My plan is to switch over as soon as my body (and doctors) will let me, because I can keep one in the back of my Subaru wagon and haul it out one handed for getting into and out of the office building. I still will need the crutches to get in and out of home though, and I'm really wobbly on crutches. That part scares me. The monthly rental for the knee walker was only $45. I thought that was very reasonable, considering the model I'm using sells for $700 locally and $400 on amazon. Even though it is very stable, I did manage to fling myself on the kitchen floor in the middle of Monday night/Tuesday morning. That was painful. I debated on whether to holler loud enough to wake up my husband or not. I decided I'd probably have to yell for five minutes to get him up, so figured out how to get the walker off of me and get myself upright again. It is all a learning process, that's for sure!
