boy, that doesn't sound any fun... :( sorry to hear that.

i always thot candida thrived in a body with a high sugar diet... i

did a quick search to confirm my initial thots and found this:

http://altmedicine.about.com/cs/conditionsatod/a/Candida.htm

during that time you were taking garlic and your vitamins, how was

your sugar intake (carbs, refined foods, sugars, fruits, etc. -

anything sweet)?

Hi Tom,

You may possibly have killed the Candida. My ex had terrible problems with it

and when he was going through the killing stage he got lots of rash type

symptoms which might explain your jock itch, etc. These were signs of a healing

crisis for him and then he would feel better until the next round. Mind you he

had totally destroyed his immune system so it was something that came and went

as he continued to heal his body.

Subject: Candida Overgrowth Related to Excess Garlic?

I recently had mild cold symptoms and was taking vitamin D (10K-50K IU for 3

days, now down to 4K to 8K daily), vitamin A (10K-20K IU), vitamin K2 MK-4 (5 mg

every 2-3 days) among a few other supplements. To help combat the virus I was

eating over 10 cloves of raw garlic daily as well (for maybe 5-7 days).

I got over the cold pretty quickly, but then some strange symptoms developed:

mild pain swallowing, dry lips and mild rash around my mouth, and jock itch. I

have never had jock itch or Athlete's foot in my life so I thought this was

strange. I have had thrush before (after long-term antibiotics) and this pain I

feel in swallowing is the same as thrush, just not quite as bad.

I strongly suspect Candida albicans. The question is, what threw off my natural

bacterial balance to allow the yeast overgrowth? Could it be the garlic? I've

never taken so much raw garlic before. Garlic is supposed to be an antiviral,

antibacterial, and antifungal and is listed as a *treatment* for candida.

However, I'm wondering if it kills bacteria to greater extent than fungus, thus

leading to the imbalance.

Any insights? My treatment plan right now is to avoid garlic and drink lots of

kefir to reestablish gut flora. I'm annoyed at these symptoms but I'm awed at

the apparent power of garlic!

I'm more inclined to thing that you have been experiencing a healing reaction

(a.k.a Herxheimer reaction) from Candida die-off, which can be intense. Or if

you weren't taking enough probiotics (in food or supplements) while you were

megadosing the garlic, you may have unintentionally thrown off the balance of

flora (killing off everything without replenishing the good stuff).

If you think that yeast could be a potential issue for you, then it might be

worth pursuing a yeast-treatment protocol that continues the work already

started. (I've rotated grapefruit seed extract, oregano oil, and garlic while

eliminating all concentrated sugars; taking high doses of probiotic supps; and

eating kefir, kraut, and kombucha. My understanding is that Candida develops a

resistance to anti-yeast agents, so it's a good idea to switch 'em up.)

Good luck -- I'm still evaluating whether my recent protocol has been only

partly successful. ;-)

I vote for this option of what may have happened to you! :) makes

sense as I recall having similar results as I detoxed and I had

unexplainable results as the toxins exited my body. sure...not

exactly the same as what u did, but similar pattern.

anyway.. how r ur symptoms now?

Tom, another possibility is an intolerance reaction, especially with the mouth

and throat symptoms. I would be most suspicious of the high amounts of garlic

in that respect. To be antimicrobial, garlic must contain some nasty compounds

that in large quantities may cause problems for human cells as well.
