OH, I am so sorry, maybe I shouldn't post this kind of stuff on this list,

since it seems to be a save haven for the parents of the younger kids most of

the time. Ididn't even think about it bothering other people, what was I

thinking?! Your hospital does it weird, by the way....all our piccs go in at

the crook of the elbow.....but we did NOT need a splint, both and

mallory did fine without one, even climbed on the monkey bars at

school and everything else 4 yo boys do and we never had a single problem

with his picc line!!! I don't believe the splint is necessary, if the picc

is working properly. thats just crazy!!! And have you tried coban? Also,

if that irritates his skin, there is a much softer product, really soft like

cotton almost but otherwise self sticking like coban made by johnsons and

johnsons, we got it at walgreens. I also saw it in pharmacies in canada, so

it must be everywhere. Its white. What we did is use the wide white J & J

stuff to wrap totally around the whole thing when not in use, then wrapped

colored coban over that, and never had a problem. Every day I let them pick

a new color, and they liked that. I already have the pink coban and the

white soft stuff ready for Mallory for tomorrow. Also, I can't believe they

stiched it in!! 's and Mallory's were not, though 's femoral

central line (remember that? grrrrr) was....

For us, besides getting it in, the dressing changes are the absolute worst

part. But now we do those ourselves.....so no problem there, though

still hates it , he tolerates it if I do it. Mallory doesn't mind so much as

long as Mommy does it and not a nurse in blue or purple gloves, lol

I am really sorry that my story made you worried. I don't understand why

they had to try for so long? I thought there were only 2 really good picc

veins in the arms at this age?
