HIV testing centre in prison opened

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 13: The Tamil Nadu AIDS Control Society has opened

an Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre at the Central Prison here

for HIV-affected prisoners and to detect fresh cases.

According to prison sources, there were about 2,000 inmates here and

the society provided an initial amount of Rs 66,000. Equipment for the

laboratory was purchased.

The Centre, opened yesterday, would be manned by a counsellor and a lab

technician. There were 14 HIV-affected prisoners.

It would monitor the health condition regularly and create awareness on

HIV and AIDS among the inmates.

Similar Centres were already functioning at Puzhal in Chennai and at

Palayamkottai Prisons, the sources added.
